[00:05] SPEAKER_02: Hello, I'm Mario Toniguzi, managing editor of Canada's Podcast. [00:10] SPEAKER_02: Today on Calgary's Podcast, I have as a guest, NOECA, who is CEO of any consulting [00:17] SPEAKER_02: Inc. and founder of the Business Analysis School in Calgary. [00:22] SPEAKER_02: Thanks for joining us today, NOE. [00:24] SPEAKER_00: Thank you for having me, Mario. [00:26] SPEAKER_02: All right, so you seem to be a very busy lady. [00:30] SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about the two things that you do. [00:32] SPEAKER_02: What, first of all, the consulting side of things? [00:35] SPEAKER_02: What do you do there? [00:36] SPEAKER_02: And what are you consulting with and who? [00:40] SPEAKER_00: Absolutely. [00:41] SPEAKER_00: So, any consulting is a business and technology consulting company. [00:45] SPEAKER_00: We provide business solutions to small and medium businesses [00:51] SPEAKER_00: in Canada and we started in the Calgary area because that's where I am [00:56] SPEAKER_00: based. And so, everything from recruitment and hiring technology integration, project management, [01:02] SPEAKER_00: business analysis, data analysis, training and workshops to provide the whole [01:07] SPEAKER_00: nine yards for businesses. [01:09] SPEAKER_00: Our goal is to help businesses increase their revenue through affordable technology systems [01:14] SPEAKER_00: and of course, improving their processes. [01:17] SPEAKER_00: So, that's what we do at any consulting. [01:19] SPEAKER_02: And how long have you been doing that? [01:22] SPEAKER_00: Six years now. [01:23] SPEAKER_02: All right, tell me you're also founder of the Business Analysis School. [01:27] SPEAKER_02: What is that? [01:29] SPEAKER_00: Yes, the Business Analysis School is an Ed Tech learning organization. [01:33] SPEAKER_00: It was also founded six years ago and I created a Business Analysis School to help aspiring [01:38] SPEAKER_00: professionals and the immediate audience at that time was immigrants in Canada because I'm also [01:44] SPEAKER_00: an immigrant to Canada and most immigrants struggle to reintegrate into their, you know, [01:50] SPEAKER_00: into the workforce when they move to Canada because you know, Canada helps you move here but [01:55] SPEAKER_00: they don't like help you settle into a job. [01:57] SPEAKER_00: So, great for immigration, not exactly integration. [02:00] SPEAKER_00: And so, the BS School is designed to help professional leverage their skills and experiences [02:05] SPEAKER_00: to land roles in business analysis, data analysis, product management and the rest of them. [02:11] SPEAKER_00: I used to be an accountant and so they were to make that transition to business analysis [02:15] SPEAKER_00: and work in tech. [02:17] SPEAKER_00: And so I created the school to help other immigrants and now be now help professionals all over the [02:22] SPEAKER_00: world to get started as business analysts. [02:26] SPEAKER_02: All right, so let's delve into your background. [02:30] SPEAKER_02: Where are you from originally? [02:32] SPEAKER_02: Nigeria. [02:33] SPEAKER_02: All right, when did you come to Canada? [02:36] SPEAKER_02: Six years ago. [02:37] SPEAKER_02: Oh really? Did you come straight to Calgary? [02:40] SPEAKER_00: Straight to Calgary. [02:42] SPEAKER_02: Why? [02:42] SPEAKER_02: Why Calgary? [02:44] SPEAKER_00: Why Calgary? [02:45] SPEAKER_00: A great question. [02:46] SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, I sure darts at the map and landed on Calgary jokes. [02:52] SPEAKER_00: So I had to choose between, it was like always between like, you know, Toronto, Vancouver, [02:57] SPEAKER_00: and Calgary. [02:58] SPEAKER_00: And I looked at so many things. [03:00] SPEAKER_00: Ah, for me, I wanted, I didn't want a big city. [03:03] SPEAKER_00: I wanted a city that, you know, could give me a mix of everything. [03:07] SPEAKER_00: Big city, but also lots, a lot of culture. [03:10] SPEAKER_00: I'm available and I love the nature here as well. [03:12] SPEAKER_00: And when I looked at the, you know, the, you know, the taxes here, you know, [03:17] SPEAKER_00: Alberta had better taxes housing as well. [03:20] SPEAKER_00: Housing was also one of the reasons why I moved here. [03:23] SPEAKER_00: You know, at that time, honestly, I have a regretted [03:26] SPEAKER_00: moving to Calgary ever since. [03:29] SPEAKER_02: So what were you doing in Nigeria? [03:32] SPEAKER_00: Great question. [03:33] SPEAKER_00: So in Nigeria, I sat in my career as an accountant and then I transitioned into business [03:38] SPEAKER_00: analysis. [03:39] SPEAKER_00: And so I was a business analyst before I moved to Canada six years ago. [03:43] SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay. [03:44] SPEAKER_02: Then what was your curious? [03:47] SPEAKER_02: I'm always curious about immigrants. [03:50] SPEAKER_02: Well, my father and my mother were immigrants too, from Italy. [03:54] SPEAKER_02: But always curious about what was the first impression of when you got here? [03:59] SPEAKER_02: What was the toughest thing to deal with? [04:02] SPEAKER_00: First impression, well, I came in April and I thought, oh, winter is over. [04:07] SPEAKER_00: So I'm still my surprise. [04:09] SPEAKER_00: I'll get out of the airport and you snow and I run back. [04:12] SPEAKER_02: It never ends in Calgary. [04:14] SPEAKER_02: You know that. [04:15] SPEAKER_02: Oh, my God. [04:17] SPEAKER_00: So I have to get used to the cold. [04:21] SPEAKER_00: But honestly, aside from that, is the people were so welcoming. [04:26] SPEAKER_00: You know, so welcoming, so lovely. [04:28] SPEAKER_00: In fact, you know, I got picked up by the airport by someone I haven't met since that night. [04:33] SPEAKER_00: Someone offered to pick me up from the airport and took me all to my house. [04:37] SPEAKER_00: You know, to my house here in Calgary that I'd already got in before I arrived. [04:42] SPEAKER_00: I've never seen that person till today. [04:44] SPEAKER_00: And I had so many stories of people have helped me in different ways. [04:50] SPEAKER_00: So I love the people here still were coming multicultural. [04:53] SPEAKER_00: I meet people from different countries, different backgrounds every day doing amazing things. [04:58] SPEAKER_00: My biggest struggle I would say was, you know, the job search process. [05:03] SPEAKER_00: So, you know, when you're coming into Canada, you know, the immigration programs, [05:07] SPEAKER_00: you know, give you the the perception that, you know, there are jobs available in Canada. [05:11] SPEAKER_00: Canada needs people. [05:13] SPEAKER_00: And then when you come in, you're asked to go to the immigration employment centers, [05:17] SPEAKER_00: speak to a counselor, get the career support and help that you need. [05:21] SPEAKER_00: However, I come from a very specialized background in business analysis, [05:25] SPEAKER_00: get it in there. [05:27] SPEAKER_00: The counselors couldn't help me. [05:28] SPEAKER_00: They didn't know much about my, you know, my job and my career. [05:32] SPEAKER_00: And, you know, the kinds of jobs they were referring me to, like, [05:36] SPEAKER_00: warehouse and, you know, stills and things like that. [05:39] SPEAKER_00: And, you know, that wasn't my background. [05:41] SPEAKER_00: And so I did struggle because I figured, oh, I'm going to get the help I need. [05:45] SPEAKER_00: And so I had to figure everything out myself and find people, [05:49] SPEAKER_00: find mentors that could help me. [05:51] SPEAKER_00: I used, you know, platforms like LinkedIn to find these mentors. [05:55] SPEAKER_01: With over 700 episodes and 500 news articles, [05:59] SPEAKER_01: we are your go-to source for all things entrepreneurship. [06:03] SPEAKER_01: Canada's podcast.com subscribe now. [06:06] SPEAKER_02: Can you talk a little bit about that, that aspect of it? [06:09] SPEAKER_02: Because, you know, I imagine, you know, for an immigrant coming to a different country, [06:16] SPEAKER_02: everything is different, everything is new. [06:19] SPEAKER_02: Some of them may not have any, excuse me, any people that they know here. [06:24] SPEAKER_02: So important is that whole connection thing, [06:27] SPEAKER_02: the resources to help immigrants transition, I guess. [06:33] SPEAKER_00: Yeah. It's really tough, Mario. [06:36] SPEAKER_00: Really, really tough. [06:37] SPEAKER_00: You know, when you come here, you have the expectation that, you know, there's going to be, [06:42] SPEAKER_00: you know, some, you know, some programs, something to help you. [06:45] SPEAKER_00: And there are some programs, but it doesn't serve all. [06:48] SPEAKER_00: It's not a one-size-fits-all thing. [06:50] SPEAKER_00: And so what really helped me was building connections before I landed in Canada, [06:55] SPEAKER_00: because I moved here by myself, no family, no friends, not knowing anybody. [07:00] SPEAKER_00: And just, you know, moving here without any support. [07:03] SPEAKER_00: And so I built my support system using all my networks. [07:07] SPEAKER_00: LinkedIn, Facebook, WhatsApp, I joined groups. [07:10] SPEAKER_00: I reached out to people directly, you know, [07:13] SPEAKER_00: introducing myself, asking for a coffee chat to learn more about their career, their experience. [07:20] SPEAKER_00: And, you know, that's something that really helped me, because [07:23] SPEAKER_00: after two weeks of being here, [07:26] SPEAKER_00: connecting with people, I started getting referrals, I started getting, you know, feedback from [07:30] SPEAKER_00: people on my interview process and helping me along my journey. [07:34] SPEAKER_00: And that helped me to learn my first job as a business analyst here. [07:38] SPEAKER_02: You must have been pretty young coming here. [07:45] SPEAKER_00: Well, I like that you think I'm still young, so yeah. [07:49] SPEAKER_02: I'm so happy to you. [07:52] SPEAKER_02: You know, but, you know, that, I don't know. [07:56] SPEAKER_02: It's just for me, you know, just coming to a place that's complete. [08:04] SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, I did that myself, not that extent, [08:08] SPEAKER_02: but I moved across the country when I was 23, only a couple of years ago. [08:13] SPEAKER_02: I moved across the country, not knowing really anybody and starting a new life. [08:21] SPEAKER_02: What is cake in an individual to do that? [08:25] SPEAKER_02: Like, what is the quality that a person needs to, I guess, take that risk? [08:31] SPEAKER_00: Right. Yeah, I think the first thing you need to have a positive mindset, [08:35] SPEAKER_00: right? Because there's so many going to be so many reasons why you shouldn't. [08:40] SPEAKER_00: Go uncertain on the internet. [08:41] SPEAKER_00: So many negative reasons. [08:44] SPEAKER_00: Ask people they're going to tell you, no, I mean, I had people telling me it was going to be the worst [08:48] SPEAKER_00: decision of my life. I shouldn't leave the job I had. [08:50] SPEAKER_00: I moved to a country that I know nobody and they say, oh, it's very cold there. [08:55] SPEAKER_00: So, you know, you need to have a very positive mindset. [08:58] SPEAKER_00: I believe that it's going to work out for you regardless. [09:01] SPEAKER_00: So that positivity is really key and then resilience because you're going to face challenges. [09:06] SPEAKER_00: You will face challenges. [09:08] SPEAKER_00: I face challenges getting in here. [09:10] SPEAKER_00: My bags were lost on my flight to Calgary. [09:13] SPEAKER_00: So imagine coming in here, no family, your bags were lost on your flight. [09:17] SPEAKER_00: You had just paid six months of rent up front. [09:20] SPEAKER_00: And so you were on a crunch to get a job, get money, you know, start your life from scratch. [09:25] SPEAKER_00: It was that resilience. [09:27] SPEAKER_00: I think I got that push to like, you know, what this has to work. [09:31] SPEAKER_00: And so that resilience is really important and that positive mindset. [09:34] SPEAKER_00: And then of course finding the community of, you know, a support system as fast as possible. [09:40] SPEAKER_02: Would you get that positive mindset from? [09:43] SPEAKER_00: I want to say a bit of it is, you know, it's inborn. [09:49] SPEAKER_00: I've always been that way. [09:51] SPEAKER_00: Taking chances, you know, had that positive mindset. [09:53] SPEAKER_00: I think they're going to work out. [09:55] SPEAKER_00: Yeah. [09:55] SPEAKER_00: But also it's also been from learning from people. [09:57] SPEAKER_00: My parents mentors reading books to help with my mindset and my belief system as well. [10:04] SPEAKER_02: Who, who did you read that was influential to you? [10:09] SPEAKER_00: Oh, I've read, I mean, I've read so many books. [10:13] SPEAKER_00: I want to say that one book that I have read that's really, really helped me, [10:16] SPEAKER_00: especially when I was moving to Canada. [10:18] SPEAKER_00: One of my mentors recommended this book, the power of the subconscious mind. [10:22] SPEAKER_00: Because I kept giving him so many negative reasons why, [10:25] SPEAKER_00: I think I should probably move right now. [10:28] SPEAKER_00: You know, I heard this, I heard that. [10:29] SPEAKER_00: And he's like, you need to train your mind. [10:31] SPEAKER_00: And so he recommended the power of the subconscious mind. [10:34] SPEAKER_00: I can't but who wrote it right now. [10:36] SPEAKER_00: But that's a really great book to help you if you're stuck in that [10:39] SPEAKER_00: unbelief and that doubtful mood. [10:42] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you get into that negative mode and, you know, [10:48] SPEAKER_02: I guess, you know, being negative, not thinking you could do something. [10:54] SPEAKER_02: Right. [10:54] SPEAKER_02: So for, so for falling prophecy, right? [10:57] SPEAKER_02: Yeah. [10:59] SPEAKER_02: You said that you had a business analysis. [11:02] SPEAKER_02: So do you focus on anything in particular, any type of business? [11:08] SPEAKER_00: Yes. [11:09] SPEAKER_00: So we did business analysis for the school. [11:12] SPEAKER_00: We help all professionals and even within any consulting, [11:16] SPEAKER_00: we help all businesses. [11:17] SPEAKER_00: I've worked across so many industries that worked in, you know, in banking, [11:21] SPEAKER_00: I've worked in tech, I've worked in construction, I've worked in the food and beverage industry. [11:25] SPEAKER_00: And also we have consultants on our team who have worked in, you know, [11:29] SPEAKER_00: healthcare, government, education. [11:31] SPEAKER_00: And so we serve a variety of industries. [11:34] SPEAKER_00: There's no limitations to the industries that we can serve. [11:37] SPEAKER_02: Okay. [11:38] SPEAKER_02: So, say you're talking to me, a monotroponer. [11:43] SPEAKER_02: Right. [11:44] SPEAKER_02: Tell me the, what are the, you know, from what you've seen? [11:48] SPEAKER_02: What are the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make? [11:51] SPEAKER_00: Ooh, biggest mistakes. [11:53] SPEAKER_00: Well, first of all, entrepreneurs think that, you know, [11:55] SPEAKER_00: when they started business, you know, family and friends are going to support them. [11:59] SPEAKER_00: You know, that's not true. [12:01] SPEAKER_01: Yes. [12:01] SPEAKER_00: Second thing is raising capital. [12:04] SPEAKER_00: A lot of entrepreneurs don't know how tough and hard it is to raise capital. [12:10] SPEAKER_00: And a lot of them start businesses and hope that, you know, they can, you know, [12:14] SPEAKER_00: raise capital quickly. [12:15] SPEAKER_00: That takes time. [12:17] SPEAKER_00: So if you're going to be bootstrapping your business, you want to make sure you do. [12:20] SPEAKER_00: You know, extensive business research. [12:22] SPEAKER_00: Have a business plan and a financial plan. [12:25] SPEAKER_00: A lot of people just have a business plan without a financial plan because [12:29] SPEAKER_00: business, set up a business is so expensive and businesses don't get profitable till some [12:34] SPEAKER_00: businesses, it takes three to five years. [12:36] SPEAKER_00: For my business, we were in profitable till about the 30 year in business. [12:40] SPEAKER_00: And so these are things you have to take note of too as well once you're starting out of business. [12:45] SPEAKER_00: Another thing is hiring and being able to hire as soon as possible. [12:49] SPEAKER_00: So once you're, you know, you want to try to place where you started and in revenue, [12:53] SPEAKER_00: I highly recommend that you start to hire for key roles so that you can focus on bringing [12:58] SPEAKER_00: in more revenue into the business. [12:59] SPEAKER_00: So if you have to do more business development or sales calls, you can hire someone to do some [13:05] SPEAKER_00: admin work so you can save more time there and bringing more revenue to the business. [13:10] SPEAKER_02: Okay. [13:10] SPEAKER_02: So being like a consultant with, uh, what business is, I imagined one of the key things is [13:19] SPEAKER_02: being brutally honest with people, right? [13:22] SPEAKER_02: And, yes, even though they may not like to hear what, uh, what you're going to tell them, right? [13:26] SPEAKER_00: Yes. [13:27] SPEAKER_00: Yes. [13:28] SPEAKER_02: How do you do that? [13:29] SPEAKER_02: How do you diplomatically do that? [13:31] SPEAKER_00: Hmm. [13:32] SPEAKER_00: That's a great question. [13:33] SPEAKER_00: So, you know, one thing that I always be like, I come with the status days, I come with the facts, [13:37] SPEAKER_00: right? [13:38] SPEAKER_00: So I don't just, you know, tell you, oh, this plan wouldn't work. [13:41] SPEAKER_00: I show you why it will work. [13:43] SPEAKER_00: Maybe, um, you know, trends of businesses who have, you know, you know, gone through this path, [13:48] SPEAKER_00: who have invested this way or who have started up in this way and I give you recommendations. [13:53] SPEAKER_00: So I have a business analyst and consultant. [13:55] SPEAKER_00: I don't just, you know, tell you this can't work. [13:57] SPEAKER_00: I give you other solutions. [14:00] SPEAKER_00: And so that's something I would do. [14:01] SPEAKER_00: I come with the facts and the statistics and then I give you multiple options [14:04] SPEAKER_00: that you can pick, select from. [14:18] SPEAKER_02: You know, starting from starting from scratch, basically, and you come up with the six years ago. [14:24] SPEAKER_02: When you look back on those six years, what do you think it was that the major successful [14:31] SPEAKER_02: and where you are today? [14:33] SPEAKER_00: Hmm. [14:35] SPEAKER_00: Well, a couple of the things that, you know, helped me through my early days still help me [14:40] SPEAKER_00: till today, I'll definitely say, you know, having a very positive mindset, strong belief system. [14:45] SPEAKER_00: I am Christian, I believe in God. [14:48] SPEAKER_00: And so I pray every day and, you know, put forward my expectation into prayer. [14:54] SPEAKER_00: You know, also, I have, you know, built a community. [14:58] SPEAKER_00: I have a support system. [15:00] SPEAKER_00: I have, you know, resilience. [15:02] SPEAKER_00: And another thing is I'm very adaptable. [15:04] SPEAKER_00: So I'm able to adapt to whatever situation. [15:07] SPEAKER_00: I find myself, I also pivot very quickly. [15:10] SPEAKER_00: I take risks as well. [15:12] SPEAKER_00: So I've taken lots of risks. [15:13] SPEAKER_00: I mean, I started this business six years ago and I moved here six years ago. [15:17] SPEAKER_00: And so we did six months of being in Canada. [15:19] SPEAKER_00: I started a business which is such a risky thing to do. [15:22] SPEAKER_00: No startup capital, no family until I was basically building my business through my earnings [15:28] SPEAKER_00: from my full-time job. [15:30] SPEAKER_00: So I've taken lots of risks, some paid, of some didn't. [15:33] SPEAKER_00: And so I highly, you know, recommend anyone who's willing to, you know, achieve great things. [15:39] SPEAKER_00: You know, you want to achieve on common things, then you have to also do on common things as well. [15:44] SPEAKER_02: So, you know what, you know, we're talking about the immigrants and it's, you know, [15:49] SPEAKER_02: immigration has been, you know, big news in Canada for the last couple of years. [15:55] SPEAKER_02: A lot of immigrants coming here. [15:58] SPEAKER_02: How important are immigrants to the country, you know, beyond the cultural part of it, [16:05] SPEAKER_02: but from an economic point of view, how important is the integration of immigrants? [16:11] SPEAKER_00: The integration of immigrants in Canada is very, very, the economic impact is so huge, so, so huge. [16:18] SPEAKER_00: First of all, immigrants, when you're coming here as a permanent resident or even as a student [16:23] SPEAKER_00: into Canada, for example, you have to come with proof of funds, you have to come with funds. [16:28] SPEAKER_00: So you don't just come empty handed. [16:30] SPEAKER_00: Canada expects that they see your bank statement is certain amount of money. [16:35] SPEAKER_00: And you're bringing that into the country. [16:37] SPEAKER_00: And so, first of all, you are, you know, either buying a home or renting a home. [16:41] SPEAKER_00: And so you're already supporting the economy. [16:43] SPEAKER_00: And then immigrants come with lots of skills. [16:46] SPEAKER_00: And so, the companies don't have to train these new immigrants because they are highly skilled. [16:52] SPEAKER_00: And so, they come in and they're coming into these companies and they're delivering value. [16:56] SPEAKER_00: And so, they're coming into these companies, serving delivery value. [17:00] SPEAKER_00: And of course, they're paying back taxes. [17:02] SPEAKER_00: Some of them are coming in and they're starting businesses until they're creating employment. [17:07] SPEAKER_00: They're paying taxes too as well and they're supporting the economy. [17:10] SPEAKER_00: So, immigrants are playing such a huge role. [17:14] SPEAKER_00: Always excited to find a new business owned by immigrants. [17:18] SPEAKER_00: I love hearing their stories and their journeys. [17:21] SPEAKER_00: And I just pray that there's going to be way more support for these immigrants [17:25] SPEAKER_00: in the coming in the future. [17:28] SPEAKER_02: Okay, so what do you do to relax? [17:32] SPEAKER_00: I love reading. I read books. [17:33] SPEAKER_00: I love to read books. [17:34] SPEAKER_00: So, I love to read books. [17:36] SPEAKER_00: I love to listen to music. [17:38] SPEAKER_00: I do, I take walks. [17:40] SPEAKER_00: And, you know, some of them are getting into like horse riding. [17:44] SPEAKER_00: I love horses. [17:45] SPEAKER_00: And so, sometimes I'm getting into horse riding. [17:47] SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, you know, I can become a pro in that. [17:49] SPEAKER_00: And then another thing I'm looking into is actually playing tennis. [17:52] SPEAKER_00: I love the sport of tennis. [17:54] SPEAKER_00: So, I'm looking into that as well. [17:56] SPEAKER_02: A busy person and especially, you know, from a professional standpoint. [18:02] SPEAKER_02: Do you think a lot of people and a lot of business owners don't spend time [18:09] SPEAKER_02: taking care of themselves? [18:10] SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely. [18:12] SPEAKER_00: I mean, I struggled with that myself. [18:14] SPEAKER_00: Especially in the early days of you grinding your business. [18:18] SPEAKER_00: I know having like the team to help you and your your the marketing person, [18:21] SPEAKER_00: the sales person, the graphic designer, every customer service [18:25] SPEAKER_00: and so it could be really tough and hard. [18:28] SPEAKER_00: But I highly recommend that we take time and listen to our bodies, [18:31] SPEAKER_00: prioritize sleep, take our vitamins, eat well, [18:35] SPEAKER_00: and try to catch those breaks, especially weekends as much as you can. [18:38] SPEAKER_00: If you can at least, you know, take some weekends off to rest. [18:42] SPEAKER_00: Your body would, you know, thank you for it. [18:44] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, certainly well. [18:45] SPEAKER_02: Well, thanks so much, uh, [18:47] SPEAKER_02: and hope for joining us today. [18:48] SPEAKER_02: It was an absolute pleasure. [18:50] SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much, Mario. [18:51] SPEAKER_00: This was a fun chat. [18:52] SPEAKER_00: Thank you. [18:54] SPEAKER_02: Okay, bye bye. [18:55] SPEAKER_00: All right, bye.
