[00:50] SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for taking the time [00:52] SPEAKER_00: to share some insights with our listeners. [00:54] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely, absolutely my pleasure. [00:56] SPEAKER_00: Looking forward to it. [00:57] SPEAKER_00: Awesome. [00:58] SPEAKER_00: Let's start by tell us a little bit more about yourself. [01:01] SPEAKER_00: How did you get into the wealth management industry? [01:03] SPEAKER_00: Did you always know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur [01:05] SPEAKER_00: and that this was what you wanted to do? [01:08] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, that's a good question. [01:10] SPEAKER_01: I mean, I wouldn't say this, [01:11] SPEAKER_01: I knew this was always what I wanted to do, [01:14] SPEAKER_01: but I did grow up in it. [01:16] SPEAKER_01: So my dad was a financial planner [01:20] SPEAKER_01: for many years, like 35 years, approximately, [01:22] SPEAKER_01: and he's been retired for about five years now, [01:25] SPEAKER_01: but I kind of grew up in the industry a little bit. [01:29] SPEAKER_01: And so certainly that had an influence on me [01:32] SPEAKER_01: and what I wanted to do in my life. [01:34] SPEAKER_01: But I got into it because I got introduced to it [01:38] SPEAKER_01: because of that. [01:38] SPEAKER_01: I didn't get into it because of that. [01:40] SPEAKER_01: Let's put it that way. [01:41] SPEAKER_01: I mean, really, what I got really excited [01:44] SPEAKER_01: about working with people and wanting to help people [01:46] SPEAKER_01: to ultimately live better lives and do things better. [01:49] SPEAKER_01: And that's why I got into it [01:51] SPEAKER_01: because I saw the impact I could have [01:54] SPEAKER_01: as a business owner as a professional [01:57] SPEAKER_01: in working with people on this level, [01:59] SPEAKER_01: helping them to maximize out their lifestyles [02:02] SPEAKER_01: and things like that. [02:03] SPEAKER_01: And so that's ultimately why I got into it. [02:05] SPEAKER_01: But I started, geez, about 15 or 16 years ago [02:09] SPEAKER_01: in the industry as a whole. [02:11] SPEAKER_01: And we started in Debra Wealth Management [02:15] SPEAKER_01: about two and a half years ago, almost three years ago [02:17] SPEAKER_01: back in 2019. [02:18] SPEAKER_01: And so we've just taken a bit of a different course [02:21] SPEAKER_01: since then, but it's been an exciting ride [02:23] SPEAKER_00: to say the least. [02:24] SPEAKER_00: That's awesome. [02:25] SPEAKER_00: So tell me more about Endeavor [02:26] SPEAKER_00: and the business of Endeavor [02:28] SPEAKER_00: and kind of day to day what Endeavor is. [02:30] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so Endeavor Wealth, like we focus on working with, [02:35] SPEAKER_01: I mean, primarily, like, [02:36] SPEAKER_01: you know, we work with a lot of business owners [02:38] SPEAKER_01: and professionals and people like that. [02:40] SPEAKER_01: But really, we were a boutique Wealth Management offering, [02:44] SPEAKER_01: Wealth Management Company that focuses on working with, [02:48] SPEAKER_01: you know, people on a broad range of financial needs. [02:53] SPEAKER_01: I would say that anybody who's looking to have, like, [02:55] SPEAKER_01: a fully coordinated financial plan, [02:59] SPEAKER_01: if you will, or Wealth Management plan, [03:01] SPEAKER_01: that's exactly the type of people that we work with. [03:03] SPEAKER_01: Often, you know, it's people with more complicated [03:05] SPEAKER_01: financial situations that we simplify those for them. [03:09] SPEAKER_01: But, yeah, we really believe in a specialized approach [03:12] SPEAKER_01: to advice. [03:13] SPEAKER_01: And so I say one of the things that makes this unique [03:14] SPEAKER_01: is we've developed a complete ecosystem of advice offering [03:18] SPEAKER_01: around our individuals, our customers [03:21] SPEAKER_01: or clients financial needs. [03:24] SPEAKER_01: And that's, I think, what really makes this unique [03:26] SPEAKER_01: in terms of execution and coordination. [03:30] SPEAKER_00: Love it. [03:31] SPEAKER_00: Why Endeavor is there a meeting behind choosing that name? [03:34] SPEAKER_00: The one you know. [03:35] SPEAKER_01: You know what's funny? [03:36] SPEAKER_01: Cause like, you go through, I mean, I did anyway. [03:38] SPEAKER_01: I would really recommend taking time to choose your name [03:43] SPEAKER_01: before you just settle on it. [03:45] SPEAKER_01: Like, don't just pick the first name that comes to mind [03:46] SPEAKER_01: when you're creating your business [03:48] SPEAKER_01: because it means it can mean so a lot. [03:51] SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to. [03:52] SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you don't care about names, like, [03:53] SPEAKER_01: I guess that's fine. [03:54] SPEAKER_01: I've always just believed you. [03:55] SPEAKER_01: If you're gonna do something, [03:56] SPEAKER_01: you might as well do something that's impactful [03:58] SPEAKER_01: and meaningful. [03:59] SPEAKER_01: And so why Endeavor? [04:00] SPEAKER_01: Well, I went through a broad iteration of names before [04:04] SPEAKER_01: settling or choosing, [04:05] SPEAKER_01: and temporary, I shouldn't say. [04:07] SPEAKER_01: I've always been a bit of a space nerd space fan. [04:11] SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, it just happened to be watching, [04:13] SPEAKER_01: I have to give my wife credit Sam credit a little bit [04:15] SPEAKER_01: as well because, you know, I was watching this documentary [04:18] SPEAKER_01: on the space shuttles. [04:20] SPEAKER_01: And, you know, she basically said, [04:23] SPEAKER_01: well, what about Endeavor? [04:24] SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, you know, after the space shuttle Endeavor. [04:27] SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, oh, that's really neat. [04:28] SPEAKER_01: So I started doing research on the space shuttle Endeavor [04:30] SPEAKER_01: and why the name was the name. [04:32] SPEAKER_01: And of course, it takes you back to like, [04:35] SPEAKER_01: you know, Captain Cook's like sailing ship, [04:37] SPEAKER_01: the Endeavor, the HMS Endeavor, [04:39] SPEAKER_01: and so on and so on and so on. [04:41] SPEAKER_01: And so you ultimately just have this broad history, [04:43] SPEAKER_01: this name is grand history. [04:45] SPEAKER_01: But really what it means to me is that, you know, [04:48] SPEAKER_01: for every Endeavor vessel ship there was, [04:51] SPEAKER_01: I mean, in my mind, they were in search [04:53] SPEAKER_01: of a better way of life for people. [04:55] SPEAKER_01: And they were there to enhance the human experience, [05:01] SPEAKER_01: the human life. [05:02] SPEAKER_01: And so I look at what we're doing here [05:04] SPEAKER_01: as the exact same way. [05:05] SPEAKER_01: So it's a hidden meaning. [05:07] SPEAKER_01: It means to, you know, kind of adventure [05:08] SPEAKER_01: and do more to be more, [05:11] SPEAKER_01: but at the same time, it's there to do that for all people. [05:14] SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of the broad history of the name Endeavor, [05:19] SPEAKER_01: but that's why we chose it in the first place. [05:21] SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm glad I think it's cool how [05:23] SPEAKER_00: there's businesses and names can have that hidden meaning [05:26] SPEAKER_00: behind it. [05:26] SPEAKER_00: And it's important, I think, especially for entrepreneurs [05:28] SPEAKER_00: to do that and to take their time. [05:30] SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that's awesome to hear. [05:31] SPEAKER_01: It can be inspiring, right? [05:32] SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can, in one word, you can have a name [05:34] SPEAKER_01: that actually means something and says a lot about your company [05:36] SPEAKER_01: or your business as a whole. [05:38] SPEAKER_01: And so anyway, yeah, it's, I think you should take the time [05:43] SPEAKER_01: to pick a name that actually means something. [05:45] SPEAKER_00: Love it. [05:46] SPEAKER_00: What's something about your industry [05:47] SPEAKER_00: that our listeners may not know? [05:49] SPEAKER_00: Is there a life or business lesson [05:51] SPEAKER_00: that you've learned from your work [05:53] SPEAKER_00: within this industry and space [05:54] SPEAKER_00: that you think can be applied elsewhere [05:55] SPEAKER_00: that you'd like to share? [05:57] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I think this industry, [05:59] SPEAKER_01: so I'm in a very traditional industry [06:01] SPEAKER_01: in the wealth management. [06:02] SPEAKER_01: It's dominated largely by the big five banks [06:05] SPEAKER_01: in the Canadian industry. [06:07] SPEAKER_01: And so I think what's really interesting about that [06:10] SPEAKER_01: is the transition that this industry has gone on [06:13] SPEAKER_01: and in large part, you think about traditional brokerage, [06:18] SPEAKER_01: for example, our industry was created as a selling arm [06:21] SPEAKER_01: for manufacturing products or even stock brokerage, [06:27] SPEAKER_01: so bringing companies to market [06:28] SPEAKER_01: and then selling those stocks to people [06:30] SPEAKER_01: that could be investors. [06:31] SPEAKER_01: And there's a huge amount of money [06:32] SPEAKER_01: that manufacturing and brokerage firms made off [06:36] SPEAKER_01: of that type of business, but that's changed a lot. [06:39] SPEAKER_01: I mean, in the last couple of decades in particular, [06:42] SPEAKER_01: the idea of advice became a thing. [06:45] SPEAKER_01: And it's not completely there, but the idea of advice [06:48] SPEAKER_01: and actually adding way more value to people [06:50] SPEAKER_01: versus just selling them products became a thing. [06:54] SPEAKER_01: And so many industries, there's constant change. [06:57] SPEAKER_01: I mean, the one constant is change in everything, right? [07:00] SPEAKER_01: And this industry is no different, [07:01] SPEAKER_01: so there's been a lot of change towards more of an advice platform. [07:06] SPEAKER_01: And it's not there yet, in my opinion, [07:07] SPEAKER_01: but that's created the opportunity for independence [07:10] SPEAKER_01: and for businesses like mine where we can go out [07:13] SPEAKER_01: and make a real difference. [07:15] SPEAKER_01: And I think that it's actually, [07:16] SPEAKER_01: there's a really great opportunity for businesses like mine [07:21] SPEAKER_01: where we can be essentially a speedboat [07:22] SPEAKER_01: amongst ocean liner tankers that are the larger companies. [07:26] SPEAKER_01: And you see this all over the world [07:28] SPEAKER_01: in other industries as well, but it's a real, [07:30] SPEAKER_01: it's an opportunity has been created [07:32] SPEAKER_01: that we're taking advantage of where we can focus in [07:34] SPEAKER_01: on client experience, customer experience, [07:37] SPEAKER_01: and make a difference in people's lives that way [07:39] SPEAKER_01: and still provide the best specialized advice [07:42] SPEAKER_01: that's available out there to them [07:43] SPEAKER_01: on all facets of their needs. [07:45] SPEAKER_01: And so I think if there's something [07:48] SPEAKER_01: that some people didn't know about our industry, [07:49] SPEAKER_01: it's that yeah, it's gone through this big iteration, [07:52] SPEAKER_01: it's changing, and it needs to change more in my opinion. [07:56] SPEAKER_01: But you know, you have way more options [07:58] SPEAKER_01: than just the big banks out there [08:00] SPEAKER_01: and there's a few businesses out there [08:01] SPEAKER_01: like mine that are looking to make a difference in it. [08:04] SPEAKER_00: So what is that long-term vision of you for endeavor [08:06] SPEAKER_00: and what do you think your company's gonna look like [08:08] SPEAKER_00: in the future, do you see yourself expanding into areas [08:11] SPEAKER_00: beyond Manitoba or across Canada? [08:14] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, absolutely. [08:16] SPEAKER_01: I think I don't get into anything [08:17] SPEAKER_01: unless I'm gonna go big on it, to be honest with you. [08:20] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, absolutely. [08:22] SPEAKER_01: I mean, my idea, there is a model for financial advice [08:27] SPEAKER_01: that's out there that already exists. [08:28] SPEAKER_01: And I think it is the perfect model. [08:30] SPEAKER_01: But if you look at the multifamily office model [08:33] SPEAKER_01: and that's just a fancy way of what we call [08:36] SPEAKER_01: an firm or an office that handles the ultra wealthy people [08:41] SPEAKER_01: out there, that's the model that I think everybody deserves [08:44] SPEAKER_01: to have. [08:45] SPEAKER_01: You're getting specialized advice from your taxes, [08:47] SPEAKER_01: around your money, your cash flow, [08:49] SPEAKER_01: your investments, your real estate, [08:50] SPEAKER_01: insurances, all of that stuff, everything built into one. [08:53] SPEAKER_01: Your philanthropy, that's that model is there. [08:56] SPEAKER_01: But the problem is, it's reserved for the people [08:59] SPEAKER_01: that have ultra wealth. [09:03] SPEAKER_01: And to me, there's nothing inspiring about taking rich people [09:07] SPEAKER_01: and keeping them rich. [09:08] SPEAKER_01: I mean, granted, we work with a lot of wealthy clients [09:11] SPEAKER_01: and that's the business model that exists today [09:14] SPEAKER_01: in my industry. [09:15] SPEAKER_01: If I'm looking down the road and you wanna say [09:18] SPEAKER_01: like 10, 15, maybe 20 years down the road, [09:21] SPEAKER_01: what I think needs to happen is that we need to, [09:24] SPEAKER_01: there's a lot of companies out there [09:25] SPEAKER_01: trying to democratize the investment, [09:27] SPEAKER_01: like the access to investments. [09:29] SPEAKER_01: I think we need to democratize advice [09:31] SPEAKER_01: and good financial advice in particular. [09:33] SPEAKER_01: And I think if we're successful at doing what we wanna do, [09:36] SPEAKER_01: then that's what's gonna happen. [09:38] SPEAKER_01: So it's kinda like the Tesla model of things, you know, [09:40] SPEAKER_01: if I'm gonna give a reference to people can imagine, [09:42] SPEAKER_01: like you know, you start off with a roadster [09:44] SPEAKER_01: that costs like $500,000 or a quarter million dollars, [09:47] SPEAKER_01: then you build like a sedan that's 150 [09:49] SPEAKER_01: and then slowly you get your way down to like a sedan [09:52] SPEAKER_01: that's like a $35,000 vehicle that more people can afford. [09:55] SPEAKER_01: And even cheaper down the road, right? [09:57] SPEAKER_01: And I think that's exactly where my industry [09:59] SPEAKER_01: or where we can take this, if you will. [10:02] SPEAKER_01: So the best way I describe it is a scalable [10:06] SPEAKER_01: multifamily office that goes national [10:07] SPEAKER_01: and that has platforms to democratize [10:12] SPEAKER_01: the world of financial advice. [10:14] SPEAKER_00: Love it. [10:15] SPEAKER_00: Entrepreneurs are built to make to think big. [10:17] SPEAKER_00: So I think that's awesome and awesome to hear. [10:20] SPEAKER_00: Why Manitoba? [10:22] SPEAKER_00: Why do you think Manitoba is such a great place [10:23] SPEAKER_00: to build a business and to start a business in? [10:26] SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, first of all, because the people, [10:28] SPEAKER_01: I mean, I love, you know, I don't even think Manitoba [10:32] SPEAKER_01: is an underdog, I think it's like an underrated place [10:35] SPEAKER_01: overall, you know? [10:36] SPEAKER_01: And I've heard so many like kind of more well-known [10:39] SPEAKER_01: local entrepreneurs here say things like, [10:42] SPEAKER_01: you know, you don't settle in Manitoba [10:44] SPEAKER_01: because of like our great natural resources, [10:46] SPEAKER_01: like we don't have like booming oil and things like that, [10:49] SPEAKER_01: you know, it's not like Calgary, [10:51] SPEAKER_01: it's not like Alberta in that sense [10:52] SPEAKER_01: and it's not like a lot of other places. [10:54] SPEAKER_01: But you do stay here because the people, [10:56] SPEAKER_01: and there's so many stories out there [10:57] SPEAKER_01: where people come here for a bit and they never leave. [11:00] SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, I've really sort of our winters, [11:02] SPEAKER_01: but you know what? [11:04] SPEAKER_01: Well, it's not as bad as mostly Winnipeg or say it is, [11:09] SPEAKER_01: but really you stick around here because the people, [11:11] SPEAKER_01: and I think from an entrepreneurial perspective [11:13] SPEAKER_01: and building businesses, [11:15] SPEAKER_01: having a good support group of people around you [11:17] SPEAKER_01: is critical to doing that. [11:19] SPEAKER_01: I mean, nobody, in my mind, nobody's really self-made. [11:22] SPEAKER_01: I mean, we all owe it back to the community around us [11:24] SPEAKER_01: to be successful and it's given us the opportunity for that. [11:27] SPEAKER_01: And if that's the case, [11:29] SPEAKER_01: then there is no better place to start a business in my mind. [11:32] SPEAKER_01: There's so many people here that are looking [11:34] SPEAKER_01: to help each other out to get each other off the ground [11:37] SPEAKER_01: and just provide that guidance when needed. [11:40] SPEAKER_01: And so I'd say in a nutshell, that's why Manitoba, [11:44] SPEAKER_01: but I think I'll also like that underrated aspect of it [11:47] SPEAKER_01: is that we can do big things here. [11:48] SPEAKER_01: You know, we can do very difficult things here [11:50] SPEAKER_01: and we can do it on a global scale. [11:52] SPEAKER_01: I'm a firm believer in that. [11:53] SPEAKER_01: And I think Manitoba's super well positioned to do that. [11:56] SPEAKER_00: So if you were to start it all over again, [11:58] SPEAKER_00: and if, for example, you just moved to here to Winnipeg, [12:02] SPEAKER_00: but this time you don't know anyone, [12:04] SPEAKER_00: knowing what you now know, what would you do, [12:06] SPEAKER_00: and how would you start? [12:07] SPEAKER_00: What would you do to start all over again [12:09] SPEAKER_00: as a nonchalant here? [12:10] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I think I get back to like, [12:13] SPEAKER_01: you know, the people are generally the, [12:14] SPEAKER_01: what makes the difference for a lot of other people out there, [12:17] SPEAKER_01: especially starting businesses. [12:19] SPEAKER_01: The first thing I would do is start to build a network. [12:23] SPEAKER_01: And there's a lot of great organizations here. [12:26] SPEAKER_01: The associates would be a really good one. [12:28] SPEAKER_01: It's a group of professionals and business owners [12:31] SPEAKER_01: that get together on a regular basis. [12:33] SPEAKER_01: The youngest associates, which is an affiliate group, [12:35] SPEAKER_01: which I know you're aware of. [12:37] SPEAKER_01: So, you know, those are two great groups, [12:38] SPEAKER_01: and there's many, many more. [12:40] SPEAKER_01: There's a great startup community here too [12:42] SPEAKER_01: with lots of people that are, again, [12:44] SPEAKER_01: willing to help each other out. [12:45] SPEAKER_01: So, the first thing I would say is get out and meet people, [12:49] SPEAKER_01: because you never know what comes from that, you know? [12:51] SPEAKER_01: Often you'll find, I've met some people in meetup groups [12:54] SPEAKER_01: like, you know, that, you know, we just found keen interests, [12:57] SPEAKER_01: or similar interests, I should say. [12:59] SPEAKER_01: And so, and then they become friends out of that, you know? [13:02] SPEAKER_01: I've been to networking groups. [13:03] SPEAKER_01: And now I'm in a friend groups, you know, [13:06] SPEAKER_01: where we have WhatsApp, Formula One groups [13:08] SPEAKER_01: with friends that I've met just through like, [13:10] SPEAKER_01: you know, a networking event. [13:11] SPEAKER_01: So, it's amazing where things can take you. [13:13] SPEAKER_01: And then on the business front as well, [13:15] SPEAKER_01: you never know who you're gonna meet, [13:16] SPEAKER_01: never know what the ideas are gonna be, [13:17] SPEAKER_01: you should share it over, you know, coffee or dinner [13:20] SPEAKER_01: or glass of wine sometimes. [13:21] SPEAKER_01: And you never know where that takes you. [13:23] SPEAKER_01: So, connect, connect, connect. [13:24] SPEAKER_01: That's the, that's the name of the game really on. [13:27] SPEAKER_00: Cool. [13:27] SPEAKER_00: Well, I know you're a busy entrepreneur. [13:30] SPEAKER_00: You have your wife, Sam, young family, [13:33] SPEAKER_00: happy first birthday to Jail. [13:34] SPEAKER_00: Jail, by the way, which is awesome. [13:36] SPEAKER_00: I wanna talk to you a little bit about you, [13:37] SPEAKER_00: a routine as an entrepreneur. [13:39] SPEAKER_00: What does kind of that first hour look like for you [13:41] SPEAKER_00: when you get up in the morning? [13:42] SPEAKER_00: Do you have a specific routine or ritual [13:44] SPEAKER_00: to get your day started or to get you motivated? [13:47] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, you mentioned Jail. [13:48] SPEAKER_01: So, she turned one yesterday. [13:49] SPEAKER_01: So, my routine has changed a whole lot in the last year. [13:53] SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'll tell you, like, my routine used to be, [13:57] SPEAKER_01: I'm an early riser. [13:58] SPEAKER_01: I love, like, I love the morning. [14:01] SPEAKER_01: I actually just don't sleep in general. [14:03] SPEAKER_00: Like, most entrepreneurs don't. [14:06] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like if I didn't have to sleep, I wouldn't. [14:07] SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm an early riser and, [14:10] SPEAKER_01: and I'm also late sleeper, if you will. [14:12] SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't, like, you know, I like to stay up late [14:14] SPEAKER_01: because I think I, I seem to get a lot of creative ideas [14:16] SPEAKER_01: like around 11 o'clock at night for some reason, you know? [14:19] SPEAKER_01: I constantly have, like, my notes on my phone. [14:21] SPEAKER_01: Like, I have my phone next to my bed all the time. [14:24] SPEAKER_01: I turn on, like, do not disturb [14:26] SPEAKER_01: because I don't want any notifications, [14:27] SPEAKER_01: but I need my notes so I can type something in there. [14:30] SPEAKER_01: But anyway, my routine in the morning, [14:32] SPEAKER_01: so this is, my alarm still goes off at 5.30. [14:35] SPEAKER_01: It used to go off at 5.30 because I get up [14:36] SPEAKER_01: and I wanna go to the gym. [14:38] SPEAKER_01: And that, I have good intentions of going to the gym [14:41] SPEAKER_01: every morning still. [14:42] SPEAKER_01: But often, you know, when I look at my weeks, [14:46] SPEAKER_01: some of the best times I get to spend with JL [14:48] SPEAKER_01: or in the morning. [14:49] SPEAKER_01: So she gets up around six. [14:51] SPEAKER_01: I got up around 5.30 to six every once in a while. [14:55] SPEAKER_01: And I get to, you know, wake her up every morning, [14:57] SPEAKER_01: basically, and spend an hour or an hour and a half with her. [15:00] SPEAKER_01: And so that's, that's, my schedule's changed because of that, [15:05] SPEAKER_01: but that's the best way to start my day [15:06] SPEAKER_01: because I mean, anybody that ever wants to question, [15:09] SPEAKER_01: if you ever want to test how passionate you are [15:12] SPEAKER_01: about doing what you're doing, go have a kid, go have a baby, [15:18] SPEAKER_01: and the amount of time that they take, [15:20] SPEAKER_01: and in my experience, frankly, [15:21] SPEAKER_01: it's done nothing but enhance what I want to do. [15:24] SPEAKER_01: I want it more because of her. [15:28] SPEAKER_01: And I want it more because of the world that she's gonna live in. [15:31] SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, I think, [15:32] SPEAKER_01: I think if you ever want to test your passions out, [15:34] SPEAKER_01: have a kid, you might find that you're not as passionate [15:36] SPEAKER_01: as you thought about it, which is fine too, right? [15:38] SPEAKER_01: But in my mind, and I'll credit my dad this [15:41] SPEAKER_01: because he told me this was gonna happen [15:43] SPEAKER_01: that if you're passionate about something, [15:45] SPEAKER_01: it's gonna enhance that you're gonna want it that much more. [15:47] SPEAKER_01: And that's totally true in my case. [15:49] SPEAKER_01: So, I love spending that time with her. [15:50] SPEAKER_01: It's a good reminder of why I do what I do every single day. [15:55] SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, I usually around 7.30, [15:59] SPEAKER_01: I'll start getting ready and I'll head into work [16:01] SPEAKER_01: and head into the office to get things rolling on. [16:05] SPEAKER_00: I know you enjoy to read. [16:07] SPEAKER_00: What books are you reading right now? [16:09] SPEAKER_00: Or audiobooks, podcasts, [16:11] SPEAKER_00: and any recommendations for our listeners [16:13] SPEAKER_00: and entrepreneurs out there? [16:15] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, I have a few different things on the go [16:17] SPEAKER_01: always at once. [16:18] SPEAKER_01: Like, a couple different podcasts. [16:21] SPEAKER_01: And I'm reading some really interesting stuff right now. [16:23] SPEAKER_01: So, I just finished a book. [16:24] SPEAKER_01: I, as you would know, but nobody else would know [16:27] SPEAKER_01: that I'm a huge Richard Branson fan. [16:28] SPEAKER_01: And so, sometimes when I'm in, like, a bit of, [16:31] SPEAKER_01: not a little, but if I'm looking just for some fun reading, [16:33] SPEAKER_01: I'll go back to like a Branson advice book [16:35] SPEAKER_01: or something like that. [16:36] SPEAKER_01: So, I just finished reading, [16:38] SPEAKER_01: like a Virgin, which is like his business advice for, [16:41] SPEAKER_01: you know, the stuff you don't learn in school, basically. [16:43] SPEAKER_01: And I never read it before. [16:44] SPEAKER_01: So, I thought it was a really good book. [16:46] SPEAKER_01: It's just like people had asked him all these questions [16:48] SPEAKER_01: and he was answering them. [16:49] SPEAKER_01: So, there's entrepreneurs from all over the world [16:51] SPEAKER_01: that he was basically answering the questions from. [16:53] SPEAKER_01: So, I'm just gonna tell you a quick story [16:54] SPEAKER_01: because this took me so back to why I started, [16:58] SPEAKER_01: why I'm doing what I'm doing and why I do, [17:01] SPEAKER_01: why I started it in the first place. [17:02] SPEAKER_01: Because I'm reading this book [17:05] SPEAKER_01: and he had a question from somebody from Nigeria [17:08] SPEAKER_01: who had started a, I think it was a kid [17:10] SPEAKER_01: and they started a lawn care business. [17:13] SPEAKER_01: And anyway, so he's giving advice around, [17:15] SPEAKER_01: like, you know, even just a simple lawn care business, [17:17] SPEAKER_01: but it took me back to when I was a kid. [17:20] SPEAKER_01: And this is so funny because I remember, [17:23] SPEAKER_01: I started a lawn care, I started a lawn care business [17:25] SPEAKER_01: when I was a kid. [17:26] SPEAKER_01: I hope, you know, if anybody listened, [17:28] SPEAKER_01: I just did the air quotes. [17:29] SPEAKER_01: Yeah. [17:29] SPEAKER_01: And my idea was, [17:31] SPEAKER_01: I really hated cutting lawns. [17:33] SPEAKER_01: I really hated it. [17:34] SPEAKER_01: I lived in a place called Headingly just outside [17:36] SPEAKER_01: of Winnipeg, we had two acres, virtually all grass. [17:40] SPEAKER_01: And anyway, I hated it. [17:42] SPEAKER_01: And I figured to myself, I don't know how well it was, [17:45] SPEAKER_01: let's say I was eight or nine. [17:45] SPEAKER_01: I figured though that if I hated this much, [17:48] SPEAKER_01: there must be other people that hate it as well. [17:50] SPEAKER_01: And so there's a problem that I can solve. [17:52] SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, I hate it, [17:53] SPEAKER_01: but if somebody's gonna give me money to do it, [17:55] SPEAKER_01: I'll do it. [17:55] SPEAKER_01: I'll solve that problem for these people. [17:57] SPEAKER_01: And so I did up these flyers. [17:59] SPEAKER_01: I did up these flyers. [18:01] SPEAKER_01: I was starting this business and I said, [18:03] SPEAKER_01: and even at that time, I was thinking, [18:04] SPEAKER_01: like, how do I make this the best customer experience possible? [18:07] SPEAKER_01: Like, I want them to do nothing. [18:09] SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna show up. [18:10] SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna take their money. [18:11] SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna do great work. [18:12] SPEAKER_01: And this is gonna be awesome. [18:14] SPEAKER_01: I like, in my flyer, I had, [18:15] SPEAKER_01: like, we will bring our own lawnmores. [18:17] SPEAKER_01: We'll bring our own equipment. [18:18] SPEAKER_01: You don't need to do it. [18:21] SPEAKER_01: So my dad sees this flyer. [18:23] SPEAKER_01: I was printing it on our old IBM computer, whatever it was. [18:26] SPEAKER_01: And so I'm printing it off. [18:27] SPEAKER_01: My dad takes a look at this flyer. [18:28] SPEAKER_01: He's like, so Grant, where's this lawnmower [18:32] SPEAKER_01: that you're claiming to have coming from? [18:35] SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh, dad, easy. [18:36] SPEAKER_01: We got one in the shed. [18:38] SPEAKER_01: He's like, you don't have a lawnmower. [18:40] SPEAKER_01: I have a lawnmower. [18:41] SPEAKER_01: So he had major concerns about it to be out of miles. [18:43] SPEAKER_01: I guess I was gonna put on his lawnmower basically. [18:46] SPEAKER_01: So the Grantway lawn care business cut shut down pretty quickly. [18:51] SPEAKER_01: Did you even cut one lawn? [18:53] SPEAKER_01: Well, I cut my own, but that's it. [18:55] SPEAKER_00: That doesn't count. [18:56] SPEAKER_01: Yeah. [18:57] SPEAKER_01: So no, we never got off the ground. [18:58] SPEAKER_01: But I was just thinking about it the other day, [19:00] SPEAKER_01: because it's a really, it's interesting [19:02] SPEAKER_01: how things happen when you're a kid [19:05] SPEAKER_01: that shape the way you do things when you're older as well. [19:08] SPEAKER_01: Or maybe you find that you did things then [19:09] SPEAKER_01: that are still the same way today. [19:11] SPEAKER_01: And in my case, I was just thinking about, [19:13] SPEAKER_01: man, I always had this passion for trying to make [19:16] SPEAKER_01: solve problems one for people, [19:18] SPEAKER_01: but to make it the best experience possible for them. [19:22] SPEAKER_01: And that was the whole point. [19:23] SPEAKER_01: Like I thought, oh man, we're gonna be putting people out [19:25] SPEAKER_01: if I have to use their lawnmower. [19:27] SPEAKER_01: Like we should bring our own lawn. [19:28] SPEAKER_01: We should make it. [19:29] SPEAKER_01: And so I just draw parallels to what we do today [19:32] SPEAKER_01: in wealth management and how we try to make [19:35] SPEAKER_01: this the best experience possible. [19:37] SPEAKER_01: And we take it from like we study the best in the business [19:39] SPEAKER_01: at it, we study Apple, we study Disney, [19:41] SPEAKER_01: we study the absolute best in the business world at this stuff [19:45] SPEAKER_01: to try to make this enhanced and great experience [19:48] SPEAKER_01: that people will one be, it'll be memorable, [19:50] SPEAKER_01: but they'll talk about it. [19:52] SPEAKER_01: And when I was reading this book, [19:54] SPEAKER_01: I was just reminded about that. [19:55] SPEAKER_01: That it's like, that goes back to when I was a kid even. [19:58] SPEAKER_01: And so I love hearing those stories for people [20:00] SPEAKER_01: because I often find like, you know, the stuff, [20:02] SPEAKER_01: the people's first memory in our world of dealing with money [20:06] SPEAKER_01: or dealing with like something in their life [20:07] SPEAKER_01: and how it formed like their opinions on business [20:10] SPEAKER_01: or whatever is so interesting. [20:12] SPEAKER_01: And so anyway, I just drew that parallel. [20:15] SPEAKER_01: But you know, so that's a book I just finished reading. [20:17] SPEAKER_01: And actually now I'm reading a book on sustainable design [20:22] SPEAKER_01: and sustainable building, which is another just passion of mine. [20:26] SPEAKER_00: Very cool, love that, love that story too. [20:28] SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you shared it. [20:30] SPEAKER_00: So kind of shifting away from work, [20:32] SPEAKER_00: how do you relax and not think about work at all? [20:34] SPEAKER_00: Is it through reading or what's kind of your favorite activities [20:36] SPEAKER_00: to do outside of work locally here in Manitoba? [20:40] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, I mean, we're really lucky here [20:42] SPEAKER_01: because we have a lot of great outdoorsy types things to do. [20:46] SPEAKER_01: I love getting out of the city. [20:47] SPEAKER_01: And if I can get to the lake and do some hiking [20:49] SPEAKER_01: or get on a boat with somebody, [20:52] SPEAKER_01: that's always fun. [20:53] SPEAKER_01: I actually find, like I love traveling. [20:56] SPEAKER_01: And I think everybody within their means should travel as much as they can. [21:00] SPEAKER_01: I know it's not for everybody, but for me, [21:02] SPEAKER_01: gives me such perspective on the world and such perspective on life. [21:06] SPEAKER_01: And so we try to travel as much as we can. [21:08] SPEAKER_01: The pandemic's obviously very difficult for that. [21:11] SPEAKER_01: And we've put on some items because of it. [21:14] SPEAKER_01: But I've really enjoyed getting to see how other people live. [21:19] SPEAKER_01: And so traveling is number one thing for me. [21:23] SPEAKER_01: But even just getting out and hiking, [21:25] SPEAKER_01: getting out into nature and quiet your mind for a little bit, [21:28] SPEAKER_01: I think that's always good. [21:29] SPEAKER_01: And of course, reading, I don't read as much as I'd like to. [21:34] SPEAKER_01: I try to read a little bit every night, basically. [21:37] SPEAKER_01: But reading's so great as well. [21:40] SPEAKER_01: Just to, it's amazing the things you'll come up with [21:43] SPEAKER_01: like if you can quiet your mind a little bit [21:45] SPEAKER_01: and just the creative thoughts you can have. [21:47] SPEAKER_01: And even just listening to what other people are going through [21:49] SPEAKER_01: or other entrepreneurs have gone through in their lives, [21:52] SPEAKER_01: I think it's amazing. [21:54] SPEAKER_01: It's a very comforting thing to know that Richard Branson [21:57] SPEAKER_01: has gone through difficult business times. [22:00] SPEAKER_01: Let's put it that way because as entrepreneurs and business owners, [22:03] SPEAKER_01: we all go through that at some point or another. [22:06] SPEAKER_01: And we only see these mega like CEO celebrities at their peaks. [22:11] SPEAKER_01: We only notice them because they're there. [22:13] SPEAKER_01: But you never know that Nike almost went bankrupt seven times [22:16] SPEAKER_01: or 10 times or something like that. [22:17] SPEAKER_01: You never hear those stories. [22:19] SPEAKER_01: And so I think it's always comforting to read those stories as well. [22:22] SPEAKER_01: It gives you a good peace of mind. [22:23] SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, for sure. [22:25] SPEAKER_00: So if you weren't doing what you're doing now, [22:28] SPEAKER_00: what would you like to be doing as a profession? [22:31] SPEAKER_01: Oh man, such a good question. [22:35] SPEAKER_01: Because you know, I look at, I would say this, [22:39] SPEAKER_01: I'm not necessarily passionate about wealth management. [22:41] SPEAKER_01: I like it. [22:42] SPEAKER_01: I'm not necessarily passionate about it though. [22:44] SPEAKER_01: I'm passionate about helping people to live better lives. [22:48] SPEAKER_01: And that's, and you know, we often talk about what's your why. [22:52] SPEAKER_01: And Simon Seneca has really made that famous, right? [22:54] SPEAKER_01: But know what's your why? [22:55] SPEAKER_01: And then really that's why I do what I do. [22:57] SPEAKER_01: And so I would find something else that's [22:59] SPEAKER_01: allowing me the opportunity to do that. [23:01] SPEAKER_01: In fact, as an entrepreneur, I'm kind of like, [23:04] SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I'd call myself a serial entrepreneur. [23:06] SPEAKER_01: I kind of think of myself that way. [23:07] SPEAKER_01: But I'm already looking at what are the other business opportunities [23:10] SPEAKER_01: and what are we doing to what other areas [23:13] SPEAKER_01: can we help make a difference in, you know, [23:16] SPEAKER_01: under this endeavor brand? [23:17] SPEAKER_01: And so I think I would do exactly what I'm doing. [23:20] SPEAKER_01: I just do a lot of other things. [23:22] SPEAKER_01: But you know, I also think my friend, a Tim, [23:24] SPEAKER_01: will laugh at this because he's an architect [23:28] SPEAKER_01: and his process, it's very similar to how we do things [23:31] SPEAKER_01: for people with money. [23:33] SPEAKER_01: But I think I love design. [23:35] SPEAKER_01: And as I mentioned, I'm reading this book [23:37] SPEAKER_01: on sustainable design right now. [23:39] SPEAKER_01: I love design. [23:40] SPEAKER_01: And I think I would probably have gone [23:42] SPEAKER_01: into either architecture. [23:44] SPEAKER_01: I'm a terrible drawer, though. [23:46] SPEAKER_01: I think there's no chance. [23:48] SPEAKER_01: I think I'm creative, but nobody would understand [23:50] SPEAKER_01: what my designs were. [23:51] SPEAKER_01: So that would have probably been a limiting factor in that career. [23:54] SPEAKER_01: But I would probably go into architecture [23:56] SPEAKER_01: or I really find civil engineering. [23:58] SPEAKER_01: The people that think of better ways to live in cities. [24:01] SPEAKER_01: I always find that fascinating. [24:03] SPEAKER_01: I met a few people like that in Australia, [24:05] SPEAKER_01: in that profession in Australia. [24:06] SPEAKER_01: And some of the ideas seem just so cool [24:09] SPEAKER_01: to think of how you help a person [24:12] SPEAKER_01: who can't see across the road better. [24:14] SPEAKER_01: Stuff like that. [24:15] SPEAKER_00: It forces you to be creative and come up with super cool things. [24:18] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah. [24:19] SPEAKER_01: So I always felt like I would get into something like that. [24:22] SPEAKER_01: I mean, to the point where I'd love to have [24:24] SPEAKER_01: an applied, a Batman reference. [24:27] SPEAKER_01: I'd love to have an applied science [24:28] SPEAKER_01: as a company someday, where all we do is think of things [24:31] SPEAKER_01: that can help people to live better lives. [24:33] SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I would definitely find something. [24:36] SPEAKER_01: I would always be involved in something [24:38] SPEAKER_01: that helps people to live better [24:39] SPEAKER_01: and live more the way they want to. [24:41] SPEAKER_00: But do you have a favorite word, quote, or sentence [24:44] SPEAKER_00: that you like to use with whether it just be for yourself [24:47] SPEAKER_00: or with your staff and your team at Endeavor? [24:53] SPEAKER_01: I'm just thinking, we have a wall here [24:55] SPEAKER_01: that we call it our Be More wall. [24:58] SPEAKER_01: And every day somebody puts a quote on the wall. [25:01] SPEAKER_01: It's never the same person. [25:04] SPEAKER_01: And sometimes you get to later in the day [25:05] SPEAKER_01: and somebody will notice that there's nothing on the wall [25:08] SPEAKER_01: that day so far. [25:08] SPEAKER_01: And then they'll put something up. [25:10] SPEAKER_01: And so I'm a huge fan of just like a few phrases [25:14] SPEAKER_01: or whatever that can like make a difference in somebody's day. [25:16] SPEAKER_01: And we purposely put it by the back door, [25:20] SPEAKER_01: which a lot of the people here will leave [25:21] SPEAKER_01: out of the back door on their way home. [25:24] SPEAKER_01: And the whole point was like, if you can get a smile [25:28] SPEAKER_01: or something like that is the last memory [25:29] SPEAKER_01: that somebody has as they're leaving the office here, [25:32] SPEAKER_01: I think that's a pretty powerful thing. [25:37] SPEAKER_01: But as it relates, there's two things that come to mind to me. [25:41] SPEAKER_01: Like I'm always, like hope is one of my favorite words. [25:45] SPEAKER_01: I'm an optimist, you know, as you probably tell [25:47] SPEAKER_01: from this podcast so far. [25:49] SPEAKER_01: But hope is if you have hope, you can pretty much do anything. [25:53] SPEAKER_01: And so hope is if I had one favorite word out there, it's hope. [25:56] SPEAKER_01: But I think if I had a phrase that I had to pick, [25:59] SPEAKER_01: it's that a rising tide raises all boats. [26:02] SPEAKER_01: And that's something that has been in the back of my mind [26:06] SPEAKER_01: through my entire career as a professional. [26:09] SPEAKER_01: And that, you know, if we're good at something [26:11] SPEAKER_01: that we should use that to help other people out, [26:13] SPEAKER_01: because at the end of the day, helping other people helps you, [26:16] SPEAKER_01: it helps the entire community. [26:18] SPEAKER_01: And that's that whole rising tide impact that you can have. [26:21] SPEAKER_01: And to the point where, you know, I'm even named [26:24] SPEAKER_01: an endowment fund that my wife and I contribute into [26:28] SPEAKER_01: after that. [26:29] SPEAKER_01: So it's the endeavor rising tide fund. [26:31] SPEAKER_01: And it basically says all you need to know about, [26:34] SPEAKER_01: about, you know, what our hopes are. [26:37] SPEAKER_01: So that would be it. [26:38] SPEAKER_00: I think that's awesome. [26:39] SPEAKER_00: So what's one piece of advice that you would like to share [26:42] SPEAKER_00: with entrepreneurs across Canada? [26:47] SPEAKER_01: You know, everybody says, like, just do it, you know, like, [26:49] SPEAKER_01: I agree with that. [26:51] SPEAKER_01: I think it's like, you've got an idea. [26:52] SPEAKER_01: You got something you want to do. [26:53] SPEAKER_01: Like you have to take, you have to take leaps. [26:55] SPEAKER_01: You have to make jumps. [26:56] SPEAKER_01: One of the things that I have always been a fan of doing [27:01] SPEAKER_01: and it's probably in the nature of like, [27:03] SPEAKER_01: I like to plan things out. [27:05] SPEAKER_01: I never like to react. [27:06] SPEAKER_01: I, you respond appropriately to the situation you're in, [27:09] SPEAKER_01: but never trying to never react because a reaction [27:12] SPEAKER_01: can, can go either the way you want it to or a lot of cases [27:15] SPEAKER_01: and go the way you don't want it to. [27:16] SPEAKER_01: Just because it's like a simple twitch, you know, [27:18] SPEAKER_01: or a quick decision. [27:20] SPEAKER_01: And you have to be able to make quick decisions. [27:22] SPEAKER_01: But the best way in my mind to make quick decisions [27:25] SPEAKER_01: in business is to have run through scenarios ahead of time. [27:30] SPEAKER_01: And so what I try to do is before I get into any sort of [27:33] SPEAKER_01: investment or any sort of business that were, [27:36] SPEAKER_01: that were either starting up or buying or taking over, [27:39] SPEAKER_01: I like to run through at least five scenarios [27:41] SPEAKER_01: of what could happen over the next, you know, [27:43] SPEAKER_01: at least three years, five years, probably. [27:46] SPEAKER_01: And no matter what happens in that three to five year period [27:49] SPEAKER_01: of time, we won't be reacting, [27:51] SPEAKER_01: but we'll be able to respond very quickly to it. [27:53] SPEAKER_01: So for example, you know, we started in 2019 here [27:56] SPEAKER_01: at the Ever Wealth Management. [27:58] SPEAKER_01: I had, I believe it was five scenarios that we had been run [28:03] SPEAKER_01: ahead of time. [28:04] SPEAKER_01: And none of them accounted for a pandemic, I'll be honest. [28:07] SPEAKER_01: Like none of them said, hey, we're gonna have a pandemic [28:09] SPEAKER_01: in 2020, but I did account for things [28:11] SPEAKER_01: like a financial crisis and I did account for things [28:13] SPEAKER_01: that can happen in this industry. [28:16] SPEAKER_01: And even like the worst case scenarios. [28:18] SPEAKER_01: And because of what happens in 2020 with the pandemic, [28:23] SPEAKER_01: it actually gave me so much comfort [28:24] SPEAKER_01: because we saw things like markets, stock markets [28:27] SPEAKER_01: around the world dropping 3% in a month. [28:30] SPEAKER_01: And the quickest drop ever that we've ever seen. [28:34] SPEAKER_01: Having the scenario as well thought out, [28:37] SPEAKER_01: offered me the opportunity to make a very quick decision [28:40] SPEAKER_01: and know exactly what we're gonna do. [28:41] SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh, we're in scenario C now. [28:44] SPEAKER_01: Okay, go with scenario C. [28:45] SPEAKER_01: And because I thought through it, [28:46] SPEAKER_01: none of it works out perfectly, [28:48] SPEAKER_01: but at least it gives you kind of a framework to work with. [28:51] SPEAKER_01: And so we have like looking at that situation [28:53] SPEAKER_01: where a lot of people in our industry, [28:54] SPEAKER_01: a lot of our competitors might have been a little bit concerned. [28:57] SPEAKER_01: The revenues have just dropped maybe 20%, 15% or so. [29:00] SPEAKER_01: We were heavily investing and knew [29:02] SPEAKER_01: that that was growth opportunity for us [29:04] SPEAKER_01: because of that scenario. [29:06] SPEAKER_01: And so that's what we've done. [29:08] SPEAKER_01: And so I think having those types of scenarios [29:10] SPEAKER_01: thought through ahead of time can really help you. [29:13] SPEAKER_01: There is analysis paralysis. [29:14] SPEAKER_01: That's the counterpoint to that, right? [29:16] SPEAKER_01: And if you're doing too much analysis [29:17] SPEAKER_01: that prevents you from making a good decision [29:19] SPEAKER_01: or a quick decision, then that's a problem. [29:22] SPEAKER_01: But thinking through the scenarios ahead of time, [29:24] SPEAKER_01: it should be used as a tool to allow you the opportunity [29:26] SPEAKER_01: to make very, very quick decisions and confident decisions. [29:29] SPEAKER_00: Of that, I think that's great advice. [29:31] SPEAKER_00: Before we kind of wrap up our conversation here today, Grant, [29:34] SPEAKER_00: I've got three quick rapid fired questions for you [29:36] SPEAKER_00: to kind of wrap up the conversation. [29:54] SPEAKER_00: If someone gave you $50,000 today to start a business, [29:58] SPEAKER_00: what business would you start? [30:00] SPEAKER_01: Oh, man. [30:02] SPEAKER_01: I would start endeavor to apply sciences [30:04] SPEAKER_01: and we would make things like massive smart technology [30:08] SPEAKER_01: that helps people. [30:11] SPEAKER_00: If you could choose one song to play every time you walked [30:13] SPEAKER_00: into a room for the rest of your life, [30:15] SPEAKER_00: what song would you choose? [30:16] SPEAKER_01: Oh, easy. [30:17] SPEAKER_01: ACDC, shoot the thrill. [30:21] SPEAKER_00: Good one. [30:21] SPEAKER_00: Good one. [30:22] SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
