[00:10] SPEAKER_00: network.
[00:11] SPEAKER_01: Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Sean V. He is the president and head coach of
[00:16] SPEAKER_01: Garou Head Coaching and facilitation solutions and based on a primusby arterial which is
[00:22] SPEAKER_01: pretty close to it's a Niagara region and just a little ways away from Hamilton.
[00:29] SPEAKER_01: So Sean, do you get a way to tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became a
[00:34] SPEAKER_01: entrepreneur?
[00:35] SPEAKER_02: Sure, well thanks a lot for having me, Lesslie.
[00:37] SPEAKER_02: So my story is I've basically had a corporate working, corporate environment for 25 years.
[00:44] SPEAKER_02: I started out my career actually working in politics.
[00:48] SPEAKER_02: I was a communications advisor in the 90s.
[00:52] SPEAKER_02: Then I got into consulting a little bit and then into the technology world.
[00:56] SPEAKER_02: I worked for a software company for about 10 years in different corporate communications
[01:01] SPEAKER_02: and internal communications leadership roles and then shifted to a complete left turn
[01:08] SPEAKER_02: and went to work for an association in the construction industry for another 10 years
[01:12] SPEAKER_02: in an executive position.
[01:15] SPEAKER_02: And somewhere around the middle of last year I got kind of this kind of this realization
[01:25] SPEAKER_02: that I really wanted to start my own business and really kind of grow something on my own.
[01:33] SPEAKER_02: And I wanted that business to focus on people and really working as much as possible,
[01:41] SPEAKER_02: you know, directly one-on-one with leaders.
[01:44] SPEAKER_02: I've always been about helping leaders lead.
[01:47] SPEAKER_02: And so that just kind of, you know, I think it was probably just some time, I don't know,
[01:54] SPEAKER_02: sitting in the sunshine on my cottage dock or something like that.
[01:57] SPEAKER_02: And I just said, you know, this is what I want to do.
[02:00] SPEAKER_02: And so I decided at the end of last year to launch my own company.
[02:06] SPEAKER_02: We're a leadership coaching and consulting company and we help leaders build great organizations.
[02:13] SPEAKER_02: And it's been a really exciting ride since then.
[02:16] SPEAKER_01: So are you based mostly in Niagara region?
[02:19] SPEAKER_01: Are you serving all of Toronto?
[02:22] SPEAKER_01: GTA.
[02:23] SPEAKER_02: So I started when I started just doing coaching individually.
[02:28] SPEAKER_02: My actually, my very first client was not even based in candidates.
[02:31] SPEAKER_02: They were based in Pennsylvania.
[02:34] SPEAKER_02: And so now our company serves clients in all over North America.
[02:40] SPEAKER_02: So Edmonton, Toronto, Mrs. Saga, Pennsylvania, and Minneapolis all over the place.
[02:47] SPEAKER_02: And so, and the beauty of a lot of what we do, especially right now, is it's online.
[02:52] SPEAKER_02: So we can we can serve our clients wherever they have.
[02:59] SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
[03:00] SPEAKER_01: What do you think the benefits are to a business?
[03:02] SPEAKER_01: And I guess Niagara.
[03:04] SPEAKER_02: Well, in the Niagara region, we have an amazing number of creative entrepreneurs emerging.
[03:14] SPEAKER_02: And actually, this region is fascinating to see.
[03:18] SPEAKER_02: There's more and more people moving into this region.
[03:21] SPEAKER_02: And especially people who are creating or launching creative
[03:27] SPEAKER_02: industry companies.
[03:28] SPEAKER_02: So marketing agencies,
[03:32] SPEAKER_02: writing agencies,
[03:34] SPEAKER_02: public relations, and government relations agencies.
[03:40] SPEAKER_02: There's this intellectual community or entrepreneurial community forming here that
[03:47] SPEAKER_02: is really interesting to see.
[03:48] SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it's the close acts this to the wine region or the a little bit warmer temperatures
[03:53] SPEAKER_02: or something, but all these creative minds are coming together in this community.
[03:57] SPEAKER_02: And it's really, really exciting to see and be a part of that and kind of tap into that.
[04:04] SPEAKER_02: Some of those people are clients for me, but others are really just our peers and suppliers
[04:10] SPEAKER_02: and partners.
[04:12] SPEAKER_02: I'm really enjoying feeding off of that creative energy that this region has.
[04:17] SPEAKER_01: I had a percent agree.
[04:20] SPEAKER_01: For our listeners, I actually live in the same town as Sean.
[04:23] SPEAKER_01: So we're part of the same community.
[04:25] SPEAKER_01: So I can vouch for that point.
[04:29] SPEAKER_01: And what do you find there are some of the challenges doing business in an agribusion?
[04:34] SPEAKER_02: This is a region that has a lot of emerging small businesses in the area.
[04:42] SPEAKER_02: And then it has a handful of very large established companies in the region.
[04:50] SPEAKER_02: So there's a few really big agribude companies or there's a large waste management company
[05:04] SPEAKER_02: not far from here.
[05:06] SPEAKER_02: But there's really sort of a handful of those big established companies and then a lot of little
[05:12] SPEAKER_02: little agencies.
[05:13] SPEAKER_02: And what we're kind of missing is that sort of middle, we don't have a ton of those mid-size
[05:19] SPEAKER_02: clients right here.
[05:20] SPEAKER_02: We're also challenged a little bit.
[05:23] SPEAKER_02: I think although I think our leadership are working on this right now around access and transit
[05:29] SPEAKER_02: and getting to those major urban hubs more quickly and easily.
[05:36] SPEAKER_02: So that's been a bit of a challenge.
[05:38] SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just accessing some of the capital that you'll find in that sort of mid-size
[05:42] SPEAKER_02: market. But as both you and I know so much of our work these days is done online that that's not
[05:49] SPEAKER_02: really a major issue, especially in my business and in the coaching and consulting business.
[05:57] SPEAKER_02: It's not difficult to coach by a video conference or over the phone even I do it really
[06:04] SPEAKER_02: effectively.
[06:05] SPEAKER_02: So that's something that I think this region as it continues to grow and come into its own is
[06:11] SPEAKER_02: going to deal with and it's going to become much more and more of a hotbed for entrepreneurial
[06:20] SPEAKER_02: talent I think.
[06:22] SPEAKER_01: I'm going to shift gears a little bit but some of our best ideas come when really
[06:26] SPEAKER_01: you're expecting them.
[06:28] SPEAKER_01: How do you disconnect and be charged?
[06:31] SPEAKER_01: How do you find some of your really fruitful ideas?
[06:36] SPEAKER_02: That's funny. You should say that because just this morning I woke up ahead of my alarm
[06:43] SPEAKER_02: and I had this idea in my head and I had to get up and start writing about it right away.
[06:50] SPEAKER_02: I totally disrupted my I'm usually very deliberate about my morning routine and I completely blew it
[06:56] SPEAKER_02: up so I could just unload this creative energy into this article I had to write.
[07:00] SPEAKER_02: But I think we have to be oddly we have to be intentional in order to be spontaneous and creative.
[07:09] SPEAKER_02: We have to plan for spontaneity if you can if you can get your head around that for a second.
[07:15] SPEAKER_02: We actually have to carve out time to access those things around us that we know
[07:22] SPEAKER_02: give us that stimulation to ignite our creative energy.
[07:26] SPEAKER_02: So for me even in spite of this you know isolation that we're in with the COVID-19
[07:34] SPEAKER_02: for me sunshine is and daylight is just this igniter for me and I will literally take time
[07:43] SPEAKER_02: between meetings and just sit in front of my window here and stare out at the blue sky
[07:49] SPEAKER_02: and the sunshine and as crazy as that sounds that actually is like that's a that fires me up.
[07:56] SPEAKER_02: You know just to see I don't know if it's the optimism in the symbolism of a blue sky and sunshine
[08:01] SPEAKER_02: or something like that but but actually taking little steps figuring out what those
[08:07] SPEAKER_02: those little igniters are for you and everybody's different but figuring out what those little creative
[08:14] SPEAKER_02: igniters are for you and actually being deliberate about making time to do those things.
[08:22] SPEAKER_02: For me that's the strategy that's really work to keep my creative energy and my physical energy
[08:28] SPEAKER_02: up as we move through these particularly through these bizarre times that we're in right now.
[08:35] SPEAKER_01: So when you say like actually make time for it you actually set out time in a schedule and say
[08:41] SPEAKER_01: like okay I'm making time for just spontaneity here I'm making time to just be creative.
[08:47] SPEAKER_01: I do. Because some people's schedules are just so jam-past.
[08:50] SPEAKER_02: They are and the short answer is yes I do. I do that. I actually schedule I have a my best time
[08:58] SPEAKER_02: for writing for example is is first thing in the morning just like I described this morning
[09:03] SPEAKER_02: and so actually after my morning routine which is a repeatable process so that I go through
[09:09] SPEAKER_02: every morning I then have the first hour of my day is set aside for writing and then I have a set
[09:18] SPEAKER_02: aside time in the middle of the day where I actually step outside unless it's like really terrible
[09:25] SPEAKER_02: weather I'll step outside and go for a walk. Fortunately we're home right now so I can go for a walk
[09:33] SPEAKER_02: with my wife for you know we'll go for a 20 minute walk or something like that and those
[09:39] SPEAKER_02: are scheduled times in my day that I know I have to protect if I want to be effective the
[09:45] SPEAKER_02: rest of the time. So yes our days are completely hectic but if we look at how we operate each of us
[09:54] SPEAKER_02: we'll figure out certain certain secrets to actually helping ourselves operate more effectively.
[10:01] SPEAKER_02: For me a walk for 20 minutes outside and we can do that here in West Niagara in spite of the
[10:15] SPEAKER_02: keeping my energy up especially in the second half of the day through that sort of that time at
[10:21] SPEAKER_02: around 3 o'clock when we really really would like a nap you know getting that fresh air injection
[10:28] SPEAKER_02: really helps me propel through the rest of the day so I finished as strong as I started.
[10:34] SPEAKER_02: So yeah I mean if we discover that those there are a handful of those kinds of things that really
[10:39] SPEAKER_02: fuel us then we do have to be deliberate about making time for them if we want to be effective.
[10:46] SPEAKER_01: That's really valuable advice. So now I'm curious what is your morning routine?
[10:52] SPEAKER_02: It's not rocket science I'll tell you that.
[10:55] SPEAKER_02: My morning routine right now in all honesty is I wake up and this is the part that I'm
[11:02] SPEAKER_02: going to change and I'll talk about that in a second but I wake up and the first thing if I'm
[11:06] SPEAKER_02: being honest that I do is I roll out of bed and I look at my phone and what's on it and I'll come
[11:15] SPEAKER_02: back to that in a second you know like take a scan through what's emails social media posts etc.
[11:21] SPEAKER_02: Then I get up have a shower get cleaned up and then I walk downstairs and I spend about 15 minutes
[11:30] SPEAKER_02: in prayer and reflection. Some people do meditation some people do just a quiet time of
[11:36] SPEAKER_02: solitude for me I'm a Christian I pray and that helps me kind of just get centered get focused
[11:43] SPEAKER_02: you know kind of reestablish what's most important for me and then I'm off to the races and I have
[11:51] SPEAKER_02: some food I often although not not consistently but but often will then take 10 minutes and do some
[12:01] SPEAKER_02: some stretching or some sort of physical like basic physical exercise just to get literally get
[12:08] SPEAKER_02: my posture and my kind of physical presence established for the day and then I start my writing
[12:14] SPEAKER_02: routine after that so the whole the morning routine is you know again it's not rocket science but it's
[12:21] SPEAKER_02: it's got in it it's got two or three things it's got the nutrition it's got a little bit of physical
[12:28] SPEAKER_02: setup for the day and it's got that time for mental and spiritual engagement that I need so it's
[12:35] SPEAKER_02: about an hour and a half to a two hour routine in general that's wonderful thank you for
[12:42] SPEAKER_02: you the part oh the part I forgot to mention the part that I want to change though is this
[12:46] SPEAKER_02: is this checking the email thing there's a guy named Brandon Rashard who I like he's a high
[12:57] SPEAKER_02: we totally can set our minds off in the wrong direction when we when we look at our phones first
[13:04] SPEAKER_02: thing in the morning and he's right he's right sometimes it works great for me and I doesn't or
[13:11] SPEAKER_02: it doesn't bother me but sometimes depending on what's sitting there in our inbox waiting for us
[13:16] SPEAKER_02: it can send our mind in the exact wrong direction that's the one thing I'm going to definitely
[13:21] SPEAKER_01: be cleaning up in my morning routine producing yeah it's a good it's a good habit to change
[13:27] SPEAKER_02: the inbox are the news right yeah the inbox the news is you know a social media post that really
[13:34] SPEAKER_02: pushes your buttons whatever it is for you I you know I got to bring back the problem for me is
[13:39] SPEAKER_02: this is my alarm clock right now so I got to bring back I have to get myself just an old
[13:44] SPEAKER_02: fashion alarm clock that I can sit beside my bed and I'm going to put the phone downstairs somewhere
[13:50] SPEAKER_02: you know but I'm not there yet but hopefully someday baby steps yeah exactly that's wonderful
[13:57] SPEAKER_01: and so the next question for you is what book are you currently creating yeah that's a great question
[14:04] SPEAKER_02: well so before we started this interview I was telling you that I've spent a lot of my time
[14:09] SPEAKER_02: during this COVID I decided to to use oh this more this time of less being around other people
[14:19] SPEAKER_02: to really dive into some of my own thinking around my company in a different way and so I've
[14:26] SPEAKER_02: been reading a lot of marketing work so I just wrapped up reading Donald Miller's Building a
[14:33] SPEAKER_02: Story brand which is a great book on marketing and I've got another book here by Russell Brunson
[14:41] SPEAKER_02: on you know funnels and building good lead generation strategy that I'm I'm starting to to
[14:46] SPEAKER_02: tick through so I'm a big fan of you know the you know the latest and greatest you know business
[14:53] SPEAKER_02: business books and so those are a couple that I've been reading through lately that's awesome
[14:59] SPEAKER_01: so you said you're working a lot on the marketing of your business I'm just wondering what's the
[15:04] SPEAKER_01: your vision for your business and kind of a five-year plan for your business right what you want
[15:09] SPEAKER_02: to see it that's great great question because one of the things that we can help other companies do
[15:14] SPEAKER_02: is have a good compelling five-year plan my five-year plan is and but the first thing we tell our
[15:22] SPEAKER_02: clients is that those it's okay for those plans to shift and it might fly your plan has shifted to
[15:26] SPEAKER_02: even in the very short time that we've been going but the plan here we believe very much in the power
[15:33] SPEAKER_02: of one-on-one coaching so what we would like to be able to do is build a consulting and a coaching
[15:42] SPEAKER_02: agency that is serving clients at least in North America if not around the around the world but
[15:49] SPEAKER_02: delivering really powerful one-on-one coaching or consulting services where you know one of our
[15:57] SPEAKER_02: consultants or one of our coaches is working directly with an executive or a leadership team
[16:03] SPEAKER_02: and really diving deep into what's going on in their business and what's going on in their leadership
[16:10] SPEAKER_02: helping them not just come up with sort of tactical solutions day to day but really transform
[16:15] SPEAKER_02: their business get at some of the underlying barriers or obstacles that are
[16:20] SPEAKER_02: maybe getting in the way of them really taking things to the next level so we're going to be at one
[16:25] SPEAKER_02: of those coaching a lot of coaches go in a different direction where they do a lot of group coaching
[16:31] SPEAKER_02: and a lot of masterminds and you know big webinar programs and conferences and this
[16:38] SPEAKER_02: that's not our vision our vision we might do a little bit of that but our vision is really to
[16:43] SPEAKER_02: actually scale the number of coaches who really get what our vision is about and what our values are
[16:49] SPEAKER_02: and and just bring those bring those out to more and more organizations and to more and more leaders
[16:55] SPEAKER_01: around the world so now I'm going to shift gears a little bit I want to talk about COVID-19
[17:01] SPEAKER_01: and how how you're molding up and what you're doing what's the most exciting thing that you've
[17:07] SPEAKER_01: been working on right now and I'm noticing that other some people are either really busy in this
[17:13] SPEAKER_01: time or they're very bored so to multi-part question where do you stand and what advice would you give
[17:19] SPEAKER_01: to entrepreneurs who are looking for things to do with their extra time you know one of the
[17:24] SPEAKER_02: interesting aspects of marketing and coaching and as you know a coaching and a consulting company is
[17:30] SPEAKER_02: we want to serve our clients but one of the ways we actually have to get out there to market our client
[17:36] SPEAKER_02: to potential clients is actually is to actually get content out to the market and and that involves
[17:43] SPEAKER_02: a lot of times sharing our ideas you know putting them out there either in the form of videos or blogs
[17:50] SPEAKER_02: or or traditional media but getting our ideas out to the market I'll be honest that was not
[17:59] SPEAKER_02: why I got into coaching and consulting I I am the guy who actually likes being behind the scenes
[18:06] SPEAKER_02: helping leaders excel I don't like to really be the one that's putting myself out there as the
[18:15] SPEAKER_02: star of the show so it took me a long time to get comfortable with that but I did and in this
[18:24] SPEAKER_02: in this time especially I decided that this is I needed to break out of you know my comfort zone
[18:32] SPEAKER_02: and and put myself out there as the kind of voice for our company and so I did and so we've got
[18:40] SPEAKER_02: you know we established I told you I established that writing routine where I'm just producing
[18:46] SPEAKER_02: blog content or video content every every morning now and the beauty of you know what we're
[18:54] SPEAKER_02: what we're in right now is there's no shortage of inspiration and what I discovered was not only
[19:00] SPEAKER_02: is is it you know me having my act together and helping those who don't you know get get get their
[19:09] SPEAKER_02: act together but I'm actually learning every day through this experience and all I'm doing is
[19:15] SPEAKER_02: just passing on what I'm experiencing what I'm learning on to the to the marketplace so quite
[19:21] SPEAKER_02: literally a blog post I'll write one day is based on something I only discovered for myself a couple
[19:28] SPEAKER_02: days earlier and that's I think that's sort of what we're supposed to do as leaders is just we don't
[19:34] SPEAKER_02: lead like we've got our act together all the time we lead authentically and then we pass on what we're
[19:39] SPEAKER_01: learning to those that we're trying to lead. Absolutely so Sean I saw on your website that you
[19:47] SPEAKER_01: experienced something a neck injury a few years ago I'm not sure exactly how long ago that
[19:53] SPEAKER_01: puts you in isolation for a few weeks and you were isolated to your bedroom and you did clean
[19:59] SPEAKER_01: a few lessons from that that are helping with this isolation now what would you what advice would
[20:06] SPEAKER_02: you get to entrepreneurs ironically I'm still there I'm still in my that's right talking to you
[20:12] SPEAKER_02: from today but yeah so what happened so a couple years ago almost exactly two years to go actually
[20:20] SPEAKER_02: I had I was very sick with fever and flu and ironically you know if it was a fever and flu and
[20:28] SPEAKER_02: I I felt I had I had I basically collapsed and I messed up my neck so I actually ended up herniating
[20:36] SPEAKER_02: four discs in the back of my neck and not only that but I basically created this set off this kind of
[20:44] SPEAKER_02: you know something in my nervous system where I was basically like lit up like a Christmas tree
[20:49] SPEAKER_02: with numbness and tingling to the point of really not being able to to move all through my upper body
[20:55] SPEAKER_02: and so I was totally incapacitated the only way I could could really kind of function was if I
[21:05] SPEAKER_02: wore this neck brace and didn't walk around very much so my doctor said you just until we get
[21:11] SPEAKER_02: this sorted out you just have to stay put and they were you know they were saying we were probably
[21:15] SPEAKER_02: going to have surgery and a whole bunch of other things so for you know for months I couldn't go
[21:23] SPEAKER_02: anywhere until you know our until the healthcare system could figure out what was wrong with me
[21:30] SPEAKER_02: you know and and get a get a treatment plan together I had been just to put this in context I had
[21:37] SPEAKER_02: been work as an executive in this association I was working for traveling a lot like three three
[21:43] SPEAKER_02: or four times a month for a few days at a time across Canada and so now I was sitting in my room
[21:51] SPEAKER_02: and that was extremely challenging and I first discovered you know I really there was a first time
[21:57] SPEAKER_02: I confronted my mortality in a significant way is the first time I realized you know how much
[22:06] SPEAKER_02: meaning we get from from the work that we do and from the relationships that we have when I was
[22:11] SPEAKER_02: finally cut off from a lot of those relationships and you know you you learn a lot about yourself
[22:18] SPEAKER_02: when a significant part of your life is suddenly taken away from you and I'm sure there are a lot
[22:24] SPEAKER_02: of listeners and viewers of this podcast who would know exactly what I'm talking about but I in that
[22:31] SPEAKER_02: process I learned a number of things that were helping me get through it and be constructive and
[22:38] SPEAKER_02: be productive and be positive and so at the time I wrote this blog and then recently I think what
[22:45] SPEAKER_02: you're referring to is I referred back to that in terms of learning that we could now apply in the
[22:49] SPEAKER_02: COVID situation you know there were a number of of learnings from that I think you know do that
[22:57] SPEAKER_02: really pop into my mind where you know just because we're shut in right now doesn't mean we're
[23:02] SPEAKER_02: disconnected from people but again like the other things like the you know creative stimulus and the
[23:09] SPEAKER_02: morning routine we have to be intentional about it and so I actually just posted on this not long
[23:15] SPEAKER_02: ago there's a video we have to be intentional about connecting with people regularly every day
[23:23] SPEAKER_02: and so I actually posted a little video the other day about what is that what might that look like
[23:28] SPEAKER_02: and I said you know you could do it three ways you can connect with three people each day
[23:34] SPEAKER_02: in particular I mean you're gonna connect with others but three people each day
[23:37] SPEAKER_02: someone you love someone you lead and someone you serve every day and you're right now at the
[23:45] SPEAKER_02: beginning of your day you're right down who those three names are and you go and you plan to reach out
[23:51] SPEAKER_02: to them ideally with a phone call but if not you send them a message say hey I'm just thinking
[23:57] SPEAKER_02: about you whatever it is but you reach out and connect with those people intentionally every day
[24:04] SPEAKER_02: and that connection is a very powerful thing even if we're introverts just having that one-on-one
[24:11] SPEAKER_02: connection reminds us of I don't know it reminds us of something really deep inside of us that we're
[24:18] SPEAKER_02: we're human beings and we and we just it's part of who we are is to be connected with other people
[24:23] SPEAKER_02: so it's a way of just being intentional about that so that was number one of the other two the other
[24:28] SPEAKER_02: thing that I really would share now is you never stopped learning and so I became very intentional
[24:35] SPEAKER_02: about my own professional development in that time just as I am now using that again this time
[24:41] SPEAKER_02: I made a plan I said okay I'm here thankfully we're in a context where there's all kinds of great
[24:48] SPEAKER_02: content online webinars books whatever it is and I made a plan to get serious about certain aspects
[24:55] SPEAKER_02: of professional development and I just done the same thing as we were talking about earlier this time
[25:00] SPEAKER_02: is just this is I'm I'm really working right now on developing my marketing skill sets in a new way
[25:09] SPEAKER_02: that was another thing it's just be really intentional use this time for something for me it was
[25:14] SPEAKER_02: professional development for you for you it might be something else but be intentional about how am I
[25:25] SPEAKER_01: those are the only questions I have for you today but I just wanted to thank you so much for
[25:30] SPEAKER_01: coming on campus podcast and sharing all of your advice and your experience thank you and especially
[25:37] SPEAKER_01: the advice for you know possible in your your experience from the Nuck and Dre and how that applies
[25:42] SPEAKER_01: to COVID-19 or experience now I know a lot of people are very isolated and lonely looking for
[25:49] SPEAKER_01: things to do and one of them I think you go through your process of getting used to it yeah that's
[25:55] SPEAKER_02: very helpful yeah well I mean it's it's it's totally normal to feel all those things and to
[26:01] SPEAKER_02: completely understand what is a strange time we're in but if we make a plan to do one or two or
[26:07] SPEAKER_02: three things that are just you know to to keep pushing us forward we'll do okay yeah so anyways
[26:12] SPEAKER_02: it's been a great I really appreciate this opportunity you guys have a great podcast lastly and I
