[00:00] SPEAKER_01: It's Calgary's Podcast on the Canada's Podcast Network.
[00:14] SPEAKER_00: Hello, this is Bonnie Elchee coming to you today with Calgary's Podcast, a member of the
[00:20] SPEAKER_00: Canada's Podcast Network, where we talk to the entrepreneurs who are making it happen
[00:25] SPEAKER_00: here in Calgary, Alberta, so you can listen, discover and engage.
[00:31] SPEAKER_00: And today we are with Lauren Vaughan, CEO and founder of the Upside Canada's largest
[00:37] SPEAKER_00: online luxury resell retailer, born and raised in a small town in Western Canada.
[00:43] SPEAKER_00: Lauren developed her passion for the resell market when she moved to Paris and learned
[00:48] SPEAKER_00: how to look chic on a budget.
[00:51] SPEAKER_00: She recognized early there was a gap in the North American market for luxury resell
[00:56] SPEAKER_00: and created the upside in 2015.
[00:59] SPEAKER_00: So Lauren, welcome to the show and thanks for being here today.
[01:03] SPEAKER_00: Thank you for having me.
[01:04] SPEAKER_00: So can you tell us a little bit about how you actually got started and how you became
[01:09] SPEAKER_00: an entrepreneur and your journey to where you are now?
[01:13] SPEAKER_01: Yes, I'd love to.
[01:14] SPEAKER_01: So I mean in the bio you got the kind of the coals notes of how I started the upside,
[01:18] SPEAKER_01: but that was really it.
[01:20] SPEAKER_01: I went to university in Calgary and I did my bachelor of commerce, majoring in marketing
[01:25] SPEAKER_01: and throughout that, you know, being based in Calgary was very heavily focused on oil
[01:28] SPEAKER_01: and gas and I never really felt as though it was a fit for me.
[01:33] SPEAKER_01: But again, I didn't know what that meant or what that looked like.
[01:36] SPEAKER_01: And then throughout university, I started in training with a Canadian designer named
[01:41] SPEAKER_01: Paul Hardy.
[01:42] SPEAKER_01: And he had done very well in the paper, especially on the Canadian circuit and as well went to
[01:45] SPEAKER_01: New York, and Toronto, and Paris.
[01:47] SPEAKER_01: So my internship granted me a lot of perks and that was that I got to go to those places
[01:51] SPEAKER_01: with him and really see a different market.
[01:54] SPEAKER_01: And I fell in love with Paris.
[01:56] SPEAKER_01: So it was there that I decided to save everything, you know, that I had.
[02:00] SPEAKER_01: I've been able to work through university and I bought a one-way ticket to Paris, thinking
[02:05] SPEAKER_01: I'm in a work in the fashion industry here.
[02:08] SPEAKER_01: And it didn't quite work out that way.
[02:10] SPEAKER_01: I was there for two years and I couldn't quite get a job good enough because my French
[02:13] SPEAKER_01: was not good enough to stay.
[02:14] SPEAKER_01: But it really did teach me how to, you know, be chic on a budget to still have that love
[02:20] SPEAKER_01: and passion for great pieces and designer things, but how to be able to attain them at
[02:25] SPEAKER_01: not-or-retail price.
[02:26] SPEAKER_01: So I think it was that whole experience that really guided my entrepreneurship journey.
[02:30] SPEAKER_00: Why don't you tell us a little bit about the upside and what the company is all about
[02:34] SPEAKER_00: today?
[02:36] SPEAKER_01: Yes.
[02:36] SPEAKER_01: So we started the upside three and a half years ago in my basement and we have grown
[02:39] SPEAKER_01: to be Canada's largest online luxury reseller.
[02:43] SPEAKER_01: So the short version of that is where you don't online consignment store.
[02:46] SPEAKER_01: But it was a market at the time and still continues to be so that, you know, was very segmented.
[02:52] SPEAKER_01: You had these kind of bricks and mortar consignment stores that didn't have, you know, the
[02:57] SPEAKER_01: best customer journey.
[02:58] SPEAKER_01: You can almost picture, you know, sifting through racks and racks and racks of overcrowded
[03:02] SPEAKER_01: things and the smell of mothballs.
[03:04] SPEAKER_01: But then you had, you know, this kind of resell market, which was up in coming, which was
[03:09] SPEAKER_01: where you could get designer pieces out of fraction of the price.
[03:13] SPEAKER_01: So it was really bringing the consignment aspect to an online marketplace to really elevate
[03:18] SPEAKER_01: that customer journey.
[03:19] SPEAKER_01: And so people could, you know, do it from the comfort of their own home.
[03:22] SPEAKER_00: And so you're really essentially an international retailer, but you're headquartered here in
[03:30] SPEAKER_00: Calgary.
[03:30] SPEAKER_00: And I'm wondering if you could share your thoughts on what are the good things about doing
[03:35] SPEAKER_00: business in Calgary.
[03:37] SPEAKER_00: And on the flip side of that, you know, have there been challenges for you, especially in
[03:42] SPEAKER_00: an industry, which is maybe more centralized at a Toronto or Montreal or New York city
[03:47] SPEAKER_00: in North America?
[03:49] SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
[03:49] SPEAKER_01: So Calgary has been an interesting market.
[03:52] SPEAKER_01: You know, it's been very good to us in that when we launched in January 2015, the economy
[03:57] SPEAKER_01: was not great here and it's still not great.
[03:59] SPEAKER_01: But what that really did, we believe, is kind of made people, they're still going to buy.
[04:04] SPEAKER_01: People are always going to buy what they want, but maybe think twice before walking into
[04:08] SPEAKER_01: a major retailer and just paying full sticker price.
[04:11] SPEAKER_01: And then on the flip side, you know, we have two clients, right?
[04:14] SPEAKER_01: We have buyers and sellers.
[04:15] SPEAKER_01: So we found there were a lot of people then and continue to be so that are maybe, maybe
[04:20] SPEAKER_01: they don't need 10 Louis Vuittons in their closet.
[04:22] SPEAKER_01: Maybe they just need to, right?
[04:23] SPEAKER_01: And they don't need the eight that are collecting dust at the bit of an exaggeration.
[04:27] SPEAKER_01: But you know, it's just, I think people just realizing that if they're not wearing it or
[04:31] SPEAKER_01: using it or loving it, or if it doesn't bring them joy, as Marie Fondo would say, that,
[04:35] SPEAKER_01: you know, maybe I'm going to sell it and get something that I do really want to use.
[04:39] SPEAKER_00: Thinking about your business and your experience about setting it up here in Calgary, do you
[04:43] SPEAKER_00: have any advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, both in your industry or even outside of that
[04:50] SPEAKER_00: as to, you know, what they should look for and starting a business here?
[04:55] SPEAKER_01: I think, you know, it's so different.
[04:58] SPEAKER_01: I can't speak to other industries.
[05:01] SPEAKER_01: You know, my industry that there is a really, I would say it's quite small, but a very
[05:05] SPEAKER_01: passionate kind of tech industry here and keeps growing.
[05:08] SPEAKER_01: And I think if whatever industry you're looking to get into, I would just surround yourself
[05:11] SPEAKER_01: with people in that industry, other entrepreneurs, if you can find mentors, and just just to
[05:16] SPEAKER_01: really understand the market and what the obstacles are going to be and how you're going to
[05:20] SPEAKER_01: need to overcome them.
[05:22] SPEAKER_00: And so thinking about the upside and what you are doing these days, Lauren, what could
[05:27] SPEAKER_00: you most excited about your business?
[05:30] SPEAKER_01: I think seeing people, we know that resale is growing 35% faster than retail.
[05:37] SPEAKER_01: And so I think to me, seeing customers that either weren't a part of, you know, the
[05:41] SPEAKER_01: consignment process before or just recently getting educated on it and get really excited,
[05:47] SPEAKER_01: you know, more and every day we really hear, you know, I've never consigned before, but
[05:50] SPEAKER_01: I'm really interested in it.
[05:51] SPEAKER_01: Or this is so great or you make it so easy.
[05:54] SPEAKER_01: So turning people to understand the value of resale and what that can bring to your life
[05:58] SPEAKER_01: as both when you're making investment into great pieces, how that you can get that investment
[06:03] SPEAKER_01: back, how you can find, you know, great classic pieces, you know, that for a fraction of retail
[06:09] SPEAKER_01: is just I think that excitement from both sellers and buyers and especially when it's their
[06:13] SPEAKER_01: first time to a consignment process, really making it a positive one for them and making
[06:17] SPEAKER_01: them want to continue to do that is something that really gets us excited.
[06:21] SPEAKER_00: When you think of the future, do you have like some specific goals or vision that you'd like to
[06:26] SPEAKER_00: share with us today?
[06:28] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so when we started, we were growing at about maybe 30 people a month.
[06:32] SPEAKER_01: I would say to our online platform and we're growing at at least a thousand people a month.
[06:38] SPEAKER_01: So it's really exciting. We're in a period of growth and that we're just, you know, we probably
[06:44] SPEAKER_01: couldn't imagine it then and now we're here and we're we've outgrown our warehouse, you know,
[06:48] SPEAKER_01: three and a half years ago it was in my basement and then it went to a friend's empty basement that
[06:52] SPEAKER_01: was bigger and then we're going to this warehouse where it now that has turned into a retail
[06:56] SPEAKER_01: office warehouse space and we've just outgrown that so we're actually in the process of moving to
[07:01] SPEAKER_01: six thousand square foot warehouse. So this is a it's a really big move for us and we're we're very
[07:07] SPEAKER_01: excited. We think the market's ready in Calgary and Canada and like you said, we are national.
[07:12] SPEAKER_01: You know, we accept consignment from all over Canada because we pay for the shipping and then
[07:16] SPEAKER_01: we sell to all over Canada and the US as well. So just getting into a space that is very on-brand
[07:23] SPEAKER_01: and is something that you know, we can picture ourselves in in, you know, the next five years is
[07:28] SPEAKER_01: something that's really exciting for us and just seeing that, you know, step by step roles.
[07:32] SPEAKER_01: We really did bootstrap everything from the beginning and you know, we're just ready to take
[07:36] SPEAKER_01: that next leap. So that's a pretty exciting, scary, fun time that we're all really looking forward to.
[07:41] SPEAKER_00: Well, and when you think about it, like just starting in 2015 in a time that was quite challenging
[07:47] SPEAKER_00: economically in Calgary and now you've seen this growth and success. Those numbers are very impressive.
[07:54] SPEAKER_00: I'm sure you must have though also had challenges along the way and I'm wondering if you could
[08:00] SPEAKER_00: share maybe a lesson or two that you've learned in particular as you've grown your business and
[08:05] SPEAKER_00: in a tougher time economically or even just, you know, going through that process for the first time.
[08:11] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think a couple overall lessons I would say just like thinking, um,
[08:17] SPEAKER_01: for a lot of lessons would, you know, again, I think our industry is kind of recession proof
[08:21] SPEAKER_01: because we're always going to see, you know, people selling and buying and, you know,
[08:25] SPEAKER_01: when times are tough, I think people are more conscious of that. However, it has a amazing
[08:28] SPEAKER_01: in Calgary especially when you want to talk about looking to raise capital and grow your business.
[08:33] SPEAKER_01: It's been very, very difficult outside of oil and gas and even in oil and gas,
[08:38] SPEAKER_01: there just isn't those investment dollars that they're once was and people have been more and more
[08:42] SPEAKER_01: so gun shy to invest in industries maybe that they don't understand or just that they're not as
[08:47] SPEAKER_01: comfortable with if they are going to invest. So being in Calgary that I would say has been the
[08:52] SPEAKER_01: biggest struggle. As far as a lesson, you know, we've, we took things very slowly and you know,
[08:58] SPEAKER_01: took us three and a half years to start to see the potential in the growth. So, you know,
[09:03] SPEAKER_01: I think one lesson has been it's taught us a lot, you know, we didn't go out and raise capital
[09:09] SPEAKER_01: rate off the bat. We really did bootstrap it to see if there wasn't market there. And I think we
[09:14] SPEAKER_01: have three and a half years behind us to say, you know, of mistakes we've made, of things we've done
[09:19] SPEAKER_01: right. And so now that we are looking to scale and grow and expand, I think we're really well prepared
[09:24] SPEAKER_00: to do that. Shifting, I guess, to a few more personal questions Lauren. I'm curious, we've talked
[09:30] SPEAKER_00: about the pros and cons of doing business here in Calgary, but in terms of the place that you
[09:36] SPEAKER_00: like to go to maybe either disconnect or get we charged for the next big opportunity. Do you have
[09:43] SPEAKER_00: a favorite spot here in the city that you like to go to? You know, in this summer, right?
[09:49] SPEAKER_01: I don't know if there's any favorite winter spaces, but in the summer, like I love Stanley Beach
[09:55] SPEAKER_01: is great or just there's so many, I think like great little parks and walking spaces and by the river
[10:00] SPEAKER_01: that you really don't actually feel like you're in Calgary. You can kind of be very central and
[10:04] SPEAKER_01: and just feel like you're you're somewhere else and bring a picnic and kind of sit there with
[10:09] SPEAKER_01: the kids or whatever that looks like, but you know, we do have some really good restaurants, I think,
[10:14] SPEAKER_01: you know, that we really need to focus on supporting local, especially in these times. It's really hard
[10:18] SPEAKER_01: and I think businesses are going to continue to close down, so I'm a small A as well before I
[10:24] SPEAKER_01: worked in fashion. I did do that, so I love wine. I love green wine and there's some really good
[10:29] SPEAKER_01: restaurants, I think in Calgary that just have wonderful wine lists and really good quality food,
[10:33] SPEAKER_01: so I love to go for a nice dinner here as well. I think that those awesome, wonderful and wondering,
[10:41] SPEAKER_00: can you tell us what was the best advice that you've ever received, whether it was from a previous
[10:46] SPEAKER_00: mentor or a family member or a professor? Is there something that you've kind of held true to
[10:53] SPEAKER_01: yourself as you've gone through your career? I think something that we just closed a seed round
[10:59] SPEAKER_01: capital race kind of really in the year and something that really stuck with me and it got me
[11:04] SPEAKER_01: through that, raising capital as its own beast and it's very difficult. Some might say soul
[11:10] SPEAKER_01: destroying is what I you know as a joke, but it's it can be very hard and it's a whole different
[11:15] SPEAKER_01: job and it's something that I don't think you can be an entrepreneur and you can have a great idea
[11:18] SPEAKER_01: and have a great business, but if you do look to go race capital it's a whole another ballgame,
[11:22] SPEAKER_01: and I remember reading an article that Colonel Sanders, the founder of KFC, he got the answer no,
[11:29] SPEAKER_01: 177 times before he actually got the capital for his fried chicken recipe to start his first restaurant,
[11:34] SPEAKER_01: and I don't you know that just kind of stuck with me 177 times, so when I was going through this
[11:40] SPEAKER_01: process and and we were raising capital every know that we got you know it was 177, so I had somehow
[11:46] SPEAKER_01: told myself if I can just get to 177 and I didn't get to 177 which is great, but that was something
[11:52] SPEAKER_01: just that I remember telling myself it's not 177 yet you just have to get there so it was something
[11:56] SPEAKER_01: that kind of kept me going because it can be very hard and discouraging when you're in that that
[12:00] SPEAKER_00: aspect of your business. Yeah it's almost like you have to tell yourself every know gets you one step
[12:05] SPEAKER_01: closer to yes right exactly yeah that's totally it so I just kept saying keep going it's not 177
[12:11] SPEAKER_01: but it's the same thing so I think that was that was really important to me and then you know as
[12:15] SPEAKER_01: you know I think surround yourself with mentors is really big as well the people that genuinely
[12:19] SPEAKER_01: believe in you and want you to do well in that you can kind of bounce ideas off of because it can
[12:24] SPEAKER_00: be lonely. Thinking you know towards the future and some of your goals can you share a couple of
[12:30] SPEAKER_00: items that are on your bucket list or things you hope to do over the next few years they can be
[12:35] SPEAKER_01: personal or professional. Yeah I think professionally you know we are looking to grow the upside
[12:43] SPEAKER_01: to be Canada's only online luxury reseller at scale so we do believe that there is you know a
[12:50] SPEAKER_01: 200 to 300 million dollar markets in the luxury reseo industry in Canada that has not been tapped so
[12:55] SPEAKER_01: obviously we would like to take the line share of that and that's something that that we're excited
[12:59] SPEAKER_01: about when we're working towards and I think personally I don't know it's hard. So much of your
[13:09] SPEAKER_01: life is engulfed in your in your business that you know personally I think looking to a point when
[13:15] SPEAKER_01: I can take a call it two-week vacation and turn off my phone. Maybe you ask you ask bugle is long
[13:23] SPEAKER_01: term let's go two week I'm going to be a little greedy I'm going to turn off my phone and have no
[13:27] SPEAKER_01: one bother me that that sounds nice maybe on a deserted island too I'm really going to throw
[13:31] SPEAKER_00: something in there. Well and you know you just preempted one of my questions because we ask this
[13:35] SPEAKER_00: question of every guest on on our podcast across the country and it is if you were dropped off
[13:42] SPEAKER_00: on a beautiful tropical island and you didn't have any connectivity but there was a phone booth
[13:48] SPEAKER_00: and you could call for a pickup at any time how long do you think you would stay and why.
[13:53] SPEAKER_01: That depended how many books and cold roses I had but right now it feels like it's day like a long time.
[13:59] SPEAKER_01: I just don't need the phone. It's not going to get used so that would be my answer right now but
[14:06] SPEAKER_01: you know we're going through a lot and a lot of big and exciting things but it can be overwhelming too
[14:10] SPEAKER_01: so so right now you could take the phone and I'll just stay with my book and Rose.
[14:13] SPEAKER_00: Sounds pretty awesome especially yeah as we look forward to another winter hearing Calgary hey.
[14:19] SPEAKER_00: Exactly yeah another looming factor yeah well our next questions are just squitly call
[14:25] SPEAKER_00: you know quick answer questions just love to hear off the top of your head what you're currently
[14:30] SPEAKER_00: reading and if you have a book you'd recommend to our audience. So I am currently reading I just
[14:37] SPEAKER_01: have one half of my summer fluff book left so I'm reading Eleanor Olafant is completely fine but I
[14:43] SPEAKER_01: just finished educated and that was a phenomenal book by Tara West over I'd recommend that to anyone
[14:48] SPEAKER_01: and then as far as nonfiction I have been picking away at scaling outfits called but it is a very
[14:55] SPEAKER_01: like educational textbook not an easy read a lot of information but you know I think even EO
[15:01] SPEAKER_01: they really base all of their teachings around this book called scaling up so that's one I'm
[15:06] SPEAKER_00: trying to get through. Well and if you weren't doing what you do now for work what other career would
[15:12] SPEAKER_00: you be in and what do you think you'd be doing for a profession? I don't know and I've thought about
[15:17] SPEAKER_01: that quite a bit because I was an entrepreneur you know there's always you have to be okay with the
[15:21] SPEAKER_01: fact that you can't fail and I think as women we have a harder time accepting that you know I would
[15:26] SPEAKER_01: be on the ground kicking and screaming but it could happen and so you know when you do have those
[15:30] SPEAKER_01: thoughts so you know or even if I didn't get into this what would I be doing and I feel so lucky to
[15:35] SPEAKER_01: say that I can't picture doing anything else I love my job it doesn't feel like a job but I don't know
[15:41] SPEAKER_00: if you had one word to describe yourself learn what would that be and why? I don't know maybe
[15:50] SPEAKER_01: charismatic I think there's people that are much smarter than I other there are people who are
[15:55] SPEAKER_01: much better at their specific profession I think what I have been very good at and continue to be
[16:01] SPEAKER_01: good at is connecting with people and growing the business in an authentic way that people
[16:08] SPEAKER_01: they have to believe your story as an entrepreneur right and it's at the end of the day it's
[16:12] SPEAKER_01: it's your story that they're they're buying into so I think you know the ability that I have to
[16:18] SPEAKER_01: connect with people has really helped me and got me to wear and the business of where we are today
[16:25] SPEAKER_00: and with so much going on in your business that that we've chatted about already today
[16:30] SPEAKER_00: what's keeping you up at night these days or are you one of those fortunate people that can put
[16:36] SPEAKER_01: your head on the pillow and go to sleep at night? No I'm not when you find them let me know and I'd
[16:43] SPEAKER_01: like to have a conversation that is not me what is keeping me up is we are taking where we're just
[16:49] SPEAKER_01: growing really fast and we're taking a lot of big risks right now you know I think they're educated
[16:53] SPEAKER_01: risks I think we have a lot to support us and it's going in the right direction but they're
[16:57] SPEAKER_01: risking nonetheless and you know it's come it's at the point where we're ready to do it ready to
[17:02] SPEAKER_01: take a leap but it's still scary so I think you know the the negative self-talk and the voices in
[17:08] SPEAKER_01: your head that can tell you you know what are you doing and you know you can't do this and you
[17:13] SPEAKER_01: just obviously we have to we have to overcome those but those about definitely keeps me up at night
[17:17] SPEAKER_01: is just a lot of the big decisions and what we're going and it's always worse to reflect on those
[17:22] SPEAKER_00: things at three o'clock in the morning when you're asleep deprived to begin with right? Yeah it's
[17:26] SPEAKER_01: very true and then you know some of the children you get it you know it's bigger bigger kids bigger
[17:30] SPEAKER_01: problems so sometimes I look back to when we first started the things I thought that you know
[17:34] SPEAKER_01: kept me up at night and I wish I had those so when you're daydreaming about positive things what
[17:40] SPEAKER_00: is your where's your favorite place to go in the world and and why would you choose that whether
[17:45] SPEAKER_00: it's a place you've already been or a place that you dream of going someday? I love Paris you know I
[17:51] SPEAKER_01: love there for two years and it really holds a dear space in my heart and I think I was there
[17:55] SPEAKER_01: at a time when I did a lot of self-growth and it was in my early 20s and you're kind of coming out
[17:59] SPEAKER_01: of university and to quote unquote the real world and just kind of coming into yourself so I have a
[18:04] SPEAKER_01: lot of not all fun but really you know vivid and good memories of Paris and where I was at in my life
[18:09] SPEAKER_01: then if I had to say like I love anywhere where sun and palm trees so California if I how I
[18:16] SPEAKER_01: I think those are all my happy places if there can be a beach and more and weather that's where I
[18:21] SPEAKER_01: choose to be especially in January right? I know it is pouring rain and gray here in Calgary right now
[18:27] SPEAKER_00: so even right now it sounds pretty nice. Do you have either a morning or evening routine where
[18:34] SPEAKER_00: you have a few non-negotiables that just have to be part of either how you start or end your day?
[18:40] SPEAKER_01: For my morning routine if I don't exercise first thing it's not happening so I try to do that
[18:45] SPEAKER_01: I try to drop up my daughter and exercise and prior to anyone else getting up I like to have a coffee
[18:50] SPEAKER_01: and I read a bullet so it's an e-news publication that you get an email one today and it kind of
[18:58] SPEAKER_01: gives you an overarching idea of what's happening in the world so I like to do that and we have a
[19:02] SPEAKER_01: coffee first thing and then kind of ease into my day and then get my exercise done and then it's
[19:06] SPEAKER_00: full on for the rest of the day. I'm wondering is there anything else that you'd like to share
[19:10] SPEAKER_00: with other snooze or any other lessons you've learned as an entrepreneur before we wrap things up
[19:17] SPEAKER_01: I think the only thing I would like to share is as an entrepreneur why and when you start things
[19:22] SPEAKER_01: you know to look back and see how maybe your idea of where your business is going and what
[19:29] SPEAKER_01: what your passion about has changed you know when we started the upside I really was
[19:34] SPEAKER_01: excited about being able to get a designer handbag for a fraction of retail and through my own
[19:39] SPEAKER_01: personal journey and through the journey of the upsides the idea of being surrounded and supporting
[19:46] SPEAKER_01: other female entrepreneurs and that collaboration has really become what I'm passionate about
[19:50] SPEAKER_01: so in our new space we're actually building in somewhat of a co-working office space where it will be
[19:58] SPEAKER_01: Calgary's most intimate collaborative female workspace so we'll have 10 spaces available and
[20:02] SPEAKER_01: half of those are already filled to where we love to have other female lead businesses in there
[20:07] SPEAKER_01: and to be able to co-collaborate and get everyone's network involved and vice versa so that's
[20:12] SPEAKER_01: something I'm truly personally excited about is I don't I wouldn't be here today with the upside
[20:18] SPEAKER_01: if if I didn't have other women's support and so we look to kind of share that and bring it back
[20:24] SPEAKER_00: to the community that's wonderful well how can our listeners you know find you online where can they
[20:29] SPEAKER_00: get connected with you personally or learn more about the upside can you share your contact information
