Key takeaways

  • Surround yourself with good people and build a strong team, as your business is only as good as the people working with you and success comes from empowering others.
  • Don't hesitate to ask for help and reach out to mentors, fellow entrepreneurs, and trusted advisors when facing challenges, as getting different perspectives is crucial for problem-solving.
  • Taking the leap into entrepreneurship requires commitment and timing—if you keep postponing the decision, it becomes harder to walk away from the security you've built.
  • Celebrate your wins, even the small ones, because entrepreneurship is hard and recognizing successes with your team helps maintain motivation during the long, challenging days.
  • Keep moving forward through the tough times and sleepless nights, knowing that obstacles are inevitable but temporary, and brighter days will come if you persevere.

[00:49] SPEAKER_01: influencers across the country. Hey everyone, I'm Phil Bliss, Founder and CEO of Canada's Entrepreneur,
[00:57] SPEAKER_01: come and cue today from Halifax. Today we're going to meet Jason Morey, the seasoned entrepreneur
[01:06] SPEAKER_01: and Dashler spokesperson for the franchise network Two Men in a Truck, which is celebrating
[01:13] SPEAKER_01: 20 years in Canada. But he also has an interesting entrepreneurial persona, which we will uncover today.
[01:21] SPEAKER_01: So welcome to Canada's Entrepreneur Jason, great to meet you. And as usual, before we get
[01:29] SPEAKER_01: deeper into your story, let's find out a bit more about you, your journey so far.
[01:36] SPEAKER_01: So give us a four minute summary of Jason, basically.
[01:42] SPEAKER_03: All right, nice to meet you as well Phil, and thanks for the opportunity to speak with you today.
[01:50] SPEAKER_03: I'm from Prince Edward Island originally, PEI born and raised, and we got graduated from the
[01:57] SPEAKER_03: University of Prince Edward Island business program. And shortly after that, I went and got my
[02:02] SPEAKER_03: law degree at Bond University in Australia. And after graduating from law school, I returned back
[02:09] SPEAKER_03: home to Prince Edward Island and practiced law and had affirmed in Charlottetown for about three
[02:15] SPEAKER_03: and a half years, but always had a passion for business and kind of a burning desire to get
[02:22] SPEAKER_03: into the business world. And so about three and a half years into my practice, I started contacting
[02:31] SPEAKER_03: some local entrepreneurs around Charlottetown around Prince Edward Island to seek out advice on,
[02:40] SPEAKER_03: I'll ask them about their journey, not unlike what's going on here today with our discussion,
[02:44] SPEAKER_03: how they got started and going through that process, suggesting that it could have a good
[02:51] SPEAKER_03: if the fire even more. And ultimately, the three and a half years in, I left the practice,
[02:59] SPEAKER_03: I gave my notice and with the support of my girlfriend at the time, who's now my wife and
[03:04] SPEAKER_03: mother of two to hunters, and family, without anything lined up, my other than just,
[03:12] SPEAKER_03: I was going to commit 100% to try to finding a business. And,
[03:19] SPEAKER_03: fortunately, going through that process and reaching out cold, calling entrepreneurs and asking
[03:26] SPEAKER_03: them for five, 10, 15 minutes their time, sit down for a coffee, you come across some pretty great
[03:32] SPEAKER_03: people who are willing to share their story and give you some pretty good advice. And ultimately,
[03:38] SPEAKER_03: one of those was a pretty well known local entrepreneur in Charlottetown, Kevin Murphy,
[03:44] SPEAKER_03: was now my business partner and mentor. He and I decided to partner up and
[03:50] SPEAKER_03: and so that kind of kickstarted our, I guess, my journey into entrepreneurship. We formed a
[03:58] SPEAKER_03: company called Co-head Bay Capital. Co-head is an area in Prince Edward Island. He has a home there.
[04:05] SPEAKER_03: Our other founder is Brother Stephen Murphy has a home there and I grew up my summers. I spent
[04:10] SPEAKER_03: around and stayed up. So we formed that company and it's a funny thing, relationships and
[04:18] SPEAKER_03: and how the world works when you're working towards something. Right around that time,
[04:24] SPEAKER_03: he got a phone call from someone that he worked with 30 years ago in the franchising world
[04:32] SPEAKER_03: in a different brand that called him on a whim to say, listen, we've got a franchise,
[04:38] SPEAKER_03: a two minute truck in a location in Halifax. The existing owners have been there about a year and
[04:44] SPEAKER_03: a half but for one reason or they have to sell. Would you know anybody that might be interested and
[04:51] SPEAKER_03: Kevin said, well, we might be. So it just funny how a relationship from 30 years prior,
[04:59] SPEAKER_03: you know, fast forward and came along. So I'll try to wrap it up but just tell you how
[05:05] SPEAKER_03: we got into it. I ended up flying to Ontario and meeting with a number of the Ontario franchisees
[05:13] SPEAKER_03: and obviously in meeting with the two minute truck corporate office and there were values.
[05:22] SPEAKER_03: The core values of two minute truck really aligned with what we were kind of at with our values
[05:27] SPEAKER_03: and then you know, Kevin had coming from the hospitality business, you know, customer service was
[05:33] SPEAKER_03: was always high and important and the two minute truck brand, you know, moving people forward
[05:39] SPEAKER_03: and the tagline, movies who care, they really had a strong focus on customer service,
[05:44] SPEAKER_03: which we liked. But also meeting with the other franchisees, it became pretty apparent.
[05:51] SPEAKER_03: You know, they were very welcoming when I came up and very eager to, you know, pull the curtain
[05:57] SPEAKER_03: back, show me their operations and look, it's like anything. It's a lot of hard work but you can have
[06:03] SPEAKER_03: a successful operation if you're willing to put the time and work in and that combination of
[06:08] SPEAKER_03: you know, almost like a felt like a family like they were very much, they want, you can tell
[06:15] SPEAKER_03: they wanted each other to succeed, they were very willing to share information with each other
[06:19] SPEAKER_03: and kind of this that customer focus from corporate kind of checked a lot of boxes for us. So
[06:26] SPEAKER_03: to make a long story a little shorter, we ultimately pulled the trigger and acquired the
[06:34] SPEAKER_03: Halifax location and I up and moved over to Halifax from PEI back. It was June 1st, 2017 when we
[06:44] SPEAKER_03: took the ownership and so it's been eight years now, we've had that location and I mean,
[06:53] SPEAKER_03: too many truck is celebrating 20 years in Canada this year. So it's just crazy how fast time goes
[06:59] SPEAKER_03: but that's a quick version of I guess how I got into my first business.
[07:04] SPEAKER_01: It's good and I think what's interesting, the way you told that was how, you know, you worked very
[07:12] SPEAKER_01: hard, you know, you put both secondary education, you went to your lower degree, you worked three
[07:21] SPEAKER_01: and a half years as a lawyer but you still weren't happy. So, you know, an entrepreneur is different,
[07:36] SPEAKER_01: you know, they are wide different, he's the something, you know, here you are, you spent five or
[07:44] SPEAKER_01: six years getting your education, you got yourself into a practice, but now you had to go off
[07:52] SPEAKER_01: and be an entrepreneur. Is there something in our mix that's different? Yeah, we maybe were a
[07:58] SPEAKER_03: little crazy, you know, the jury could be out on that but you know, it's funny, I enjoyed the
[08:05] SPEAKER_03: practice of life, it was rewarding and it was good challenge but I just had a, you know, a passion
[08:13] SPEAKER_03: for wanting to get into business and to be honest Phil, what I really tip to scale was, you know,
[08:20] SPEAKER_03: talking it over with my wife and I was always scheming up business ideas or tripping on this would
[08:26] SPEAKER_03: be cool to try that would be cool and it kind of got to a point there, I guess I would, my late,
[08:32] SPEAKER_03: mid to late 20s, you know, three and a half years in, it was, if I hadn't, if I didn't take the,
[08:37] SPEAKER_03: I felt I guess at that time, but I didn't take the plunge now. A few more years of continuing to
[08:44] SPEAKER_03: practice and build up my practice, it would have been a lot harder to kind of walk away from that,
[08:49] SPEAKER_03: well, I built up the firm and I just, it was one of those, you know what, the only live once,
[08:56] SPEAKER_03: let's give it a shot, let's jump in. It didn't know, as I said, I didn't know what I was going to get
[09:02] SPEAKER_03: into when I first wanted to get into business and all I knew enough to do was to just
[09:09] SPEAKER_03: try to ask around town who had successful companies and goal call and just trying to line up a coffee
[09:16] SPEAKER_03: or beer, one-on-one with the owners and just ask for advice. But ultimately, then doing that,
[09:23] SPEAKER_03: you know, having it sitting down and talking to people how they started into whatever business
[09:28] SPEAKER_03: they got into and not only that, but one question, how did people come up with the financing
[09:35] SPEAKER_03: or how did they come up with the idea or how did they come up with the, you know, the capital
[09:39] SPEAKER_03: resources, whatever it is and, you know, graciously a lot of people were willing to sit down and tell
[09:46] SPEAKER_03: me their, their journey and their story and that only kind of, you know, fueled the fire to be like,
[09:51] SPEAKER_03: okay, I really want to give this a shot. So, you know, why a franchise, you know, you're pretty
[10:01] SPEAKER_01: innovative, creative kind of guy. What, why a franchise versus, you know, finding something
[10:08] SPEAKER_03: and going at the own kind of thing? Yeah, great question and there's certainly pros and cons to
[10:15] SPEAKER_03: to both, you know, certainly with franchising, you know, you have a network that you can draw
[10:22] SPEAKER_03: from, they're brand recognition and awareness presumably. It's been around for a little bit,
[10:28] SPEAKER_03: positive reputation built up and a good amount of resources and people you can
[10:36] SPEAKER_03: call upon to kind of help you through that journey, right? And that's really a big strength
[10:40] SPEAKER_03: of franchising is that, you know, there's people that have been there and done that and have
[10:44] SPEAKER_03: have kind of created a formula, if you will, that look, nothing works absolutely. So,
[10:50] SPEAKER_03: I had every market's different, but we'll, you know, a guideline and resources and people that
[10:55] SPEAKER_03: there to help you. And certainly those are positives, but truth be told, we weren't targeting
[11:03] SPEAKER_03: a franchise per se when we were, you know, trying to look into getting our first business.
[11:08] SPEAKER_03: Both of my mentors had been involved in their own independent, but also their own franchising
[11:15] SPEAKER_03: businesses. One of my partners, Steve and Murphy had owned a, you know, a number of
[11:20] SPEAKER_03: when he's in Tim Hortons business for a long time. So, he was well familiar with that and
[11:24] SPEAKER_03: and Kevin had been involved in a number of chain restaurant franchising businesses as well as
[11:30] SPEAKER_03: his own independent. So, they had a good, good understanding of the pros and cons of both.
[11:36] SPEAKER_03: But, you know, being in my first one coming in, you know, it was kind of a combination of two
[11:42] SPEAKER_03: things, I guess, that one was that we felt like this brand of mis-franchised the two-minute
[11:47] SPEAKER_03: attract brand was strong and having met with and spoke with franchisees, you could sense that,
[11:54] SPEAKER_03: that there was a good strong brand and a good team atmosphere and you were going to get good
[11:59] SPEAKER_03: support. So, that was important, but also with this particular, you know, acquisition of the
[12:07] SPEAKER_03: Halifax location, it was, it was early in its stage. It was a year and a half in that it had
[12:14] SPEAKER_03: opened. Now, two-minute truck came to Canada in 2005, but the Halifax location only opened in 2015
[12:20] SPEAKER_03: and it was attractive to get in relatively early and be able to grow with the brand and in
[12:28] SPEAKER_01: spring a great, great journey for us so far. So, you know, I was looking at your LinkedIn and I see,
[12:40] SPEAKER_01: oh, this two-minute truck, and there's this, and there's this, and there's this. So, I'm just
[12:49] SPEAKER_01: interested in from that side of things, you know, you're, you're part of, I think there was four,
[13:00] SPEAKER_01: four organizations of different, different, you know, different types. How does that work
[13:11] SPEAKER_01: on on the sort of business cycle and just interested?
[13:19] SPEAKER_03: Well, you need good people. You know, surround yourself with really good people, you know, and
[13:25] SPEAKER_03: been fortunate, I'll go back to it a lot. They haven't two really good partners and mentors.
[13:32] SPEAKER_03: You're kind of helping me through all the journey and and we've been able to, you know,
[13:39] SPEAKER_03: build on our portfolio and we've actually recently had a successful exit on one of our companies
[13:46] SPEAKER_03: as well, which was great. But really to answer your question, you need to surround yourself with
[13:53] SPEAKER_03: good people. You need to, and there's a great line that Kevin always said, he's got a big poster
[14:00] SPEAKER_03: behind his office that says it's all about people and it's so true. The most important part of your
[14:07] SPEAKER_03: business is people at all levels, learning to work with people, you know, overcome challenges
[14:15] SPEAKER_03: together, how do you empower people? And it's it's the hardest, but also the most rewarding part of
[14:22] SPEAKER_03: the business. And in order to be able to kind of, you know, as we've been able to add to our
[14:28] SPEAKER_03: portfolio, you know, we have a stand-fax properties and we had to USA and we just had a recent exit on
[14:34] SPEAKER_03: that and COVID-19 being our apparent company. You need to surround yourself with good people
[14:40] SPEAKER_03: in order to be able to do that because it's impossible to do it all. Now, the flip side, if I can
[14:45] SPEAKER_03: just say, I should have started with this is in the beginning and anyone's journey, you know,
[14:51] SPEAKER_03: you don't always have the benefit of having the capital or your business, it may not be at a size
[14:57] SPEAKER_03: yet where you can have lots of people on board, see the path of the royal, your sleeves up and do a
[15:02] SPEAKER_03: lot of it yourself, but over time as you're able to to add on, it's yeah, you just keep
[15:07] SPEAKER_03: to surround yourself with good people and and good things happen. So what's what's been the greatest
[15:15] SPEAKER_01: challenge that you faced in your and this entrepreneurial life so far that you know that you've
[15:23] SPEAKER_03: been able to overcome? I guess I already hid on it, but I'll kind of expand on it more and it's
[15:33] SPEAKER_03: learning how it sounds terrible, but I'll expand on it, it's working with people or managing people.
[15:41] SPEAKER_03: It's same in except, you know, few businesses that may only have none or one employee or a sole
[15:47] SPEAKER_03: sole employee owner, you know, you're always going to be working with people, you know,
[15:54] SPEAKER_03: facets within your own walls, where there's, but it also could be suppliers, could be customers,
[15:59] SPEAKER_03: and managing people's, you know, expectations and what motivates them or what drives them,
[16:08] SPEAKER_03: you know, your business is only as good as the people that you have in it working with you
[16:12] SPEAKER_03: and putting a team together and something I, you know, continued to practice today is always
[16:20] SPEAKER_03: trying to learn how to work with people and build a better team and that is something early on
[16:26] SPEAKER_03: when you're getting into entrepreneurship and really hits you right away. It's just the importance
[16:31] SPEAKER_03: of working with people and you know, how to hire and motivate and work through issues with people
[16:38] SPEAKER_03: together, build a team and overcome, you know, challenging people and whether it's within your
[16:44] SPEAKER_03: organization or that are related, you know, through another avenue, but I must say it's one of
[16:52] SPEAKER_03: those things you have no choice if you just, you had to figure it out and kind of persevere with
[16:56] SPEAKER_03: people and it's as you grow in your entrepreneurial journey, you start to work with some awesome,
[17:03] SPEAKER_03: really, really great people and it's not only is the biggest challenge in terms of, you know,
[17:13] SPEAKER_03: how to do that effectively and grow with it, you know, build a team, but it is extremely rewarding when
[17:19] SPEAKER_03: you, you know, start to put the pieces together in place and start attracting really good people,
[17:25] SPEAKER_03: grow a company together with your team. I mean, that's ultimately what, where you get your excitement
[17:31] SPEAKER_03: and it's kind of a two-party hit story, yes, but yeah, people, it's the best party business
[17:36] SPEAKER_01: awesome, the biggest challenge. So, you know, you've been doing this for a while now and you obviously
[17:45] SPEAKER_01: hit curves that you didn't expect. Is there a process that you've been able to, is there a way of
[17:56] SPEAKER_01: managing those challenges that you've learned that you could maybe pass on to people because,
[18:07] SPEAKER_01: you know, they can get pretty serious at times. Absolutely.
[18:13] SPEAKER_03: Lean on people that you trust to ask for help, ask for advice, you know, both my two mentors I
[18:25] SPEAKER_03: talked to every week, bounce ideas and problems I run into. I often talk with my team that we do
[18:33] SPEAKER_03: daily on how to overcome, you know, issues or barriers that pop up, but I reach out, you know,
[18:39] SPEAKER_03: with, you know, two men on a truck, I reach out to my fellow franchisees every week and, you know,
[18:46] SPEAKER_03: try, what's working, what's not working. Now, here's the issue I'm facing, what did you guys do?
[18:51] SPEAKER_03: You know, often people, when they run into challenge, they're, they might think, they don't want
[18:57] SPEAKER_03: to tell anyone that they've come across a problem. They almost want to figure it out on their own and
[19:03] SPEAKER_03: you learn quickly that ask for help and reach out to people who have been there, even if they're not
[19:09] SPEAKER_03: in the same business that you're in, you know, a sober second thought can go a long way. When you
[19:14] SPEAKER_03: are hyper focused on your business and, you know, in the trenches, so to speak, sometimes it's
[19:20] SPEAKER_03: hard to see the force through the trees and kind of pull yourself up and have a different perspective.
[19:26] SPEAKER_03: So something I'm constantly doing is reaching out and just trying to pick people's brains whether
[19:33] SPEAKER_03: they're involved in my business or not on how they would do something just to try to get a different
[19:38] SPEAKER_01: perspective. So, if you could go back to when you were starting the business,
[19:47] SPEAKER_01: is there something you wish you'd known that you know now that, you know, that you kind of,
[19:56] SPEAKER_01: oh damn, if I know not at the beginning, I'd have done it faster, better, whatever.
[20:04] SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm sure there's lots. But, you know what, I think, you know what I think I honestly feel
[20:13] SPEAKER_03: what I would tell myself is, you know, get through it is probably what I would tell myself.
[20:21] SPEAKER_03: And what I mean by that is there are many times, it doesn't matter how well prepared you are,
[20:28] SPEAKER_03: you think you are for obstacles that are going to come away or challenges that you might think
[20:32] SPEAKER_03: you see in the road ahead. Things are going to hit you left, right, and center unexpectedly.
[20:37] SPEAKER_03: And sometimes they're within, you know, the scope of the business you're in, and sometimes it's
[20:42] SPEAKER_03: economically or politically or things that happen outside that he didn't see coming.
[20:48] SPEAKER_03: And it can, you know, it can certainly cause a lot of sleepless nights and anxiety and,
[20:54] SPEAKER_03: and you know, you face these challenges and sometimes you think it's the world just going to,
[20:58] SPEAKER_03: you know, it's the end of the day, you know, it's, it's, it's coming crashing down.
[21:04] SPEAKER_03: And I think if I could go back out telling myself, uh, listen,
[21:09] SPEAKER_03: there's going to be bad days, there's going to be lots of them. There's going to be a lot of good days too.
[21:13] SPEAKER_03: But when those bad days come, uh, keep moving forward, keep pushing, it will, you know, it will pass
[21:20] SPEAKER_03: and, uh, and brighter days are ahead. You don't need to, uh,
[21:25] SPEAKER_03: you know, you're going to have, you're going to be anxious when those days happen and that's okay
[21:28] SPEAKER_03: because it kind of kicks you into here, but, and you should be, you want to focus on those problems
[21:33] SPEAKER_03: to ultimately come with some up with a solution, but it's okay that you, you will get through those,
[21:38] SPEAKER_01: tough ones. It's good. So that's, that's good advice. I mean, what, what's the best piece of it,
[21:43] SPEAKER_01: you know, in terms of mentorship and advice and things like that? What's the best piece of advice
[21:47] SPEAKER_01: that you've received that you can, you know, you keep in your back pocket, uh, because you,
[21:53] SPEAKER_01: you know, you know, it's, you, you may need it to use it at the, at the various times.
[22:00] SPEAKER_03: It was that, you know, it was just, just that you keep going, you know, you just keep going, yeah.
[22:06] SPEAKER_03: Just, you know, don't give up. And another one too, which I like to celebrate your successes.
[22:11] SPEAKER_03: So even the little wins, you know, life's too short, business is hard. It really is an end.
[22:18] SPEAKER_03: Even the little wins you get celebrate with your team and enjoy the moment when you have some
[22:22] SPEAKER_03: success, uh, and share it with everybody because it, you know, it's, it can be long days,
[22:28] SPEAKER_03: especially early on. Yeah. So it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, celebrate your wins.
[22:32] SPEAKER_01: One of my ones is, and clearly ahead.
[22:37] SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you just gotta get away and clear your hand and then come back fresh.
[22:43] SPEAKER_01: You know, reset yourself. That's right. Unfortunately, we don't have a button here to reset ourselves.
[22:51] SPEAKER_03: I'm good, I'm good trip or night away. Sometimes we do that.
[22:56] SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's good. Uh, that's, that's some really good stuff in there. Um, it's sort of interesting,
[23:04] SPEAKER_01: you know, we talk about solo prenairs and, and whatever and what you're telling me,
[23:12] SPEAKER_01: even if you're, you're on your own business, you shouldn't be a solo. You should, you should be
[23:19] SPEAKER_01: linked to a network of people that were, for advice for, for this, for that, for the, for the next
[23:27] SPEAKER_01: thing. That's, that's, that's a good, good, good thing. I like it. You keep coming
[23:34] SPEAKER_01: back, you know, to people, to people, to people. That's, that's, uh, it's all about people.
[23:41] SPEAKER_01: It's so very important. You know, that's really is. Okay, that's, that's the serious stuff. Let's have,
[23:46] SPEAKER_01: let's have some fun. Um, no, you can leave your band up there. We won't, we won't get to you.
[23:51] SPEAKER_01: I don't think you want me to play it anyway. It's not very good. It was a Christmas gift. I still got to,
[23:57] SPEAKER_01: I'm still working on it. Okay. Uh, if you weren't doing what you're doing now, would you still be
[24:05] SPEAKER_03: a lawyer? What, what would you be doing instead? I guess, probably, uh, but it's hard to imagine
[24:14] SPEAKER_03: doing anything else at this, at this point. No, I guess, yeah, I guess I'd still be, still be a lawyer.
[24:21] SPEAKER_01: Okay. And what book are you currently reading or what podcast you're listening to that you'd
[24:27] SPEAKER_03: recommend to our audience? Yeah, I'm reading a book called The Franchise, the business of building
[24:34] SPEAKER_03: winning teams. Yeah, great book. It's, it's a sports business book. It's actually, uh, the,
[24:42] SPEAKER_03: the author had interviewed a number of NHL executives and owners on what's the best
[24:50] SPEAKER_03: formula? How do you win the Stanley Cup? And how do they put together their executive teams to
[24:56] SPEAKER_03: ultimately put together their own ace teams to try to, you know, build a winning culture and a winning
[25:00] SPEAKER_03: team? Very, very interesting book. Uh, I often try to either read sports books, business books,
[25:06] SPEAKER_03: or invest in both worlds, something that's combined. But, um, two books I would, if I can give a
[25:13] SPEAKER_03: two word answer, the, uh, two books I would recommend, especially young people looking to get into
[25:18] SPEAKER_03: entrepreneurship. And, and both of these books were recommended to me early on. One's called The One
[25:23] SPEAKER_03: Minute Manager. And it's, uh, it's a great book. It's a very short read. Uh, you can sit down and
[25:29] SPEAKER_03: read it in one, one easy read, but it, someone getting into business, I think that's a, it's a great
[25:33] SPEAKER_03: little kickstart, um, to get you going. And then another one is Start With Why by Simon Sinek. And, uh,
[25:43] SPEAKER_03: Jay, really good book that kind of get you to ask that, you know, Start With Why, Not The How,
[25:49] SPEAKER_03: What Or Who, or When, but Start With Why with Your Business, Why Do You Off For The Product
[25:54] SPEAKER_03: or Service You Do, or Why Do You Want to Get Into That Business, It's a really good
[26:00] SPEAKER_03: book. Not for anyone, whether you're a seasoned entrepreneur or are starting out, I think it's
[26:05] SPEAKER_01: it. Those are two good ones. And I know you just subscribed to Canada's entrepreneur. So,
[26:13] SPEAKER_01: try and look at that in there too. Okay, I was asked this one because I kind of, kind of,
[26:20] SPEAKER_01: this is, this is my, my data question. Are you a morning or a night person?
[26:27] SPEAKER_03: I'm a morning person now. Uh, I would say 15 years ago, I was a night person, but
[26:33] SPEAKER_03: kind of forced to go, I'm very much a morning person. Get up early and get to work. Yeah.
[26:38] SPEAKER_01: It seems to be that most, I think we're about 80% morning people, and a lot of people have changed
[26:48] SPEAKER_01: as they got their business and got into it. You need that, you need that morning time to
[26:53] SPEAKER_01: clear your brain. You know, I think that's probably about it. If you had to pick one word,
[27:01] SPEAKER_01: the describes of Jason, you know, what would it be and why would you choose it?
[27:09] SPEAKER_02: The question, um,
[27:15] SPEAKER_02: well, I would have heard, can you be a hyphenated word, maybe open-minded?
[27:19] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but yeah. And then, vice, expand on it. My, I love sitting down with people
[27:27] SPEAKER_03: and talking about business, and I love sitting down with my, my team and, and talking,
[27:33] SPEAKER_03: working through problems. And I'm very, I love trying something new.
[27:37] SPEAKER_03: I mean, certainly anything you implement, you gotta give it time, you know, to see if it's
[27:43] SPEAKER_03: gonna work, but I, I love getting new ideas, and I love, you know, I love challenging new ideas
[27:49] SPEAKER_03: as well. So if you're, you know, presented new idea, be prepared to, you know, back it up, but
[27:54] SPEAKER_03: I love, I'm very open-minded, I think, and, uh, love trying something new and seeing it in a work.
[28:03] SPEAKER_03: So I think that would be something, my team, if they were, if you were to ask them that question,
[28:08] SPEAKER_03: I think that's cancer, they might get it. That's good. Okay, so in this crazy world,
[28:14] SPEAKER_01: what's keeping you up at me?
[28:18] SPEAKER_03: Well, obviously I was my two young kids. We've got a two-month-old and a two-year-old.
[28:25] SPEAKER_03: That's so, so, it's all be a same, yeah.
[28:27] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but business-related, you know, I think every entrepreneur would give the same answer.
[28:36] SPEAKER_03: Your, your, your minds are always racing. You're always trying to think, you know, what,
[28:40] SPEAKER_03: what can I do better, uh, on all aspects, whether it's operationally or with you, you know,
[28:44] SPEAKER_03: if you're team and your people and what resources are marketing, or, you know, what's up,
[28:49] SPEAKER_03: something we can do better for the customer, you know, what's something the competition's doing
[28:53] SPEAKER_03: that I'm not, or what am I missing? I think your minds are just constantly, you know,
[28:57] SPEAKER_03: it's thinking that and every night before you go to bed, it's the last thing you think of,
[29:02] SPEAKER_03: and then as you get up in the morning, it's okay, you know, what are we going to tackle today? It's
[29:07] SPEAKER_03: I would, I'm always thinking, what, what am I missing? What, what's something else we can be doing?
[29:11] SPEAKER_01: It's different. It's good. You know, uh, it keeps you in two-man in the truck in front of me,
[29:19] SPEAKER_01: and, you know, thanks for, thanks for talking about that. And I am, I am, I'm not really in
[29:26] SPEAKER_01: Halifax today, I'm in Hamilton, which is, which is, you know, where, we're two men in the truck
[29:34] SPEAKER_01: kicked off in Canada, which is kind of interesting. But it's been great meeting you Jason,
[29:42] SPEAKER_01: and thank you very much for coming, coming on to Canada's entrepreneur.
[29:47] SPEAKER_03: Phil, thanks for having me. It was an absolute pleasure, and you should come down to Halifax
[29:52] SPEAKER_01: sometime, or PEI, either one, because I love it. Yeah, I, I, I, I love it, I've been there, I know.
[29:58] SPEAKER_03: I always come back, you know, it's great. Next time you do, we'll, we'll meet up and have a beer in
[30:05] SPEAKER_01: a lobster. Yeah, maybe some music as well. Of course, of course. Okay, I sing you. You too.
[30:14] SPEAKER_01: Well, that was a fun interview, and, you know, pretty serious thing with Jason said,
[30:20] SPEAKER_01: it's all about people. They are the key to success in entrepreneurship.
