Canada’s long-awaited national AI strategy, expected this week, must re-establish a clear legislative path for governance that keeps pace with the rapid adoption already underway, says CPA (Chartered Professional Accountants) Canada.
“Canada has focused heavily on AI adoption and compute capacity, but governance has not kept pace,” says CPA Canada’s AI and technology lead Melissa Robertson. “Without clear guardrails, businesses and workers are being asked to navigate uncertainty as these technologies reshape operations and jobs.”
As highlighted in CPA Canada’s pre-budget submission, the federal government must strike the right balance between supporting innovation and ensuring effective oversight. The strategy will be judged not only on its ability to boost productivity, but on whether it enables responsible adoption across the broader economy, added the organization.
“Effective governance is what will unlock trust in AI systems,” Robertson says. “That’s what allows organizations to scale adoption while managing risks related to security, bias and system integrity.”
CPAs, trained in assurance, governance and controls, are well positioned to support this work, particularly as organizations look to demonstrate that AI systems are operating as intended, said CPA Canada.
