As Canada’s employment landscape continues to evolve, new research from Robert Half highlights the growing complexity of job searching and hiring in 2025. Cal Jungwirth, Director of Permanent Placement Services at Robert Half, notes that economic caution, technological disruption, and changing expectations are shaping both sides of the hiring equation.
According to Robert Half research, which surveyed 835 professionals aged 18 and over across Canada in March 2025, job seekers face several key challenges. Finding a job that aligns with their skills was the top concern for 33% of respondents. Others cited preparing for and successfully executing the interview process (23%), and crafting application materials that stand out (21%) as major hurdles in the current market.
While many candidates are now using AI tools to polish résumés, rehearse interview questions, and research companies, there’s a risk of overreliance. Some job seekers are using generative AI to tailor résumés too closely to job descriptions—sometimes exaggerating experience—leading to mismatches during interviews or after hiring.
On the employer side, large companies are increasingly relying on AI and applicant tracking systems to filter through hundreds of applications. However, Jungwirth emphasizes that despite these tools, the human element remains essential. Determining cultural fit, assessing behaviour, and having real conversations are still key to hiring success—particularly in smaller companies where automation is less common.
In a job market marked by uncertainty and innovation, job seekers are encouraged to use AI strategically but honestly, while employers must continue to balance automation with authentic, human-centred hiring practices.
