Six years ago, Bearspaw Golf Club was on the verge of disappearing from Calgary’s landscape—another casualty of financial uncertainty.
But recently, the club announced a move few would have predicted back then: Bearspaw will go fully private on January 1, 2026. It’s a defining milestone in a comeback story that speaks volumes about reinvention, resilience, and how Calgary communities can rally together to build something better than before.
Since reopening under new ownership in 2020, Bearspaw has done more than just recover. It has flourished. The club has become a magnet for young Calgary families, invested in a 30,000-square-foot modern clubhouse, and built a vibrant culture rooted in warmth, accessibility, and love of the game. With the Stoney Trail ring road now in place, it’s easier than ever to access—and families from all over the city and surrounding rural communities have taken notice.

PRESS RELEASE
CALGARY (July 24, 2025) – In a bold move that marks the next chapter in its remarkable resurgence, Bearspaw Golf Club will officially become a fully private club on January 1, 2026. This transition reflects the club’s long-term vision for sustainability—carefully balancing growing member interest with a commitment to preserving tee time availability and an exceptional playing experience. As part of this evolution, Bearspaw will soon introduce a waitlist for new members and increase its one-time initiation fee from $40,000 to $50,000, effective August 15, 2025.
The transition marks a defining moment in Bearspaw’s transformation—from a club that faced financial uncertainty just six years ago to one of Alberta’s most sought-after private golf destinations. Since reopening under new ownership in 2020, Bearspaw has welcomed a wave of new members, including many young families from Calgary and surrounding rural communities. The club’s expansive terrain, newly built 30,000-square-foot clubhouse, and vibrant, inclusive atmosphere—now even more accessible thanks to the completed Stoney Trail ring road—have made it an increasingly attractive option for families seeking a premium golf experience close to home.
“This is an exciting and affirming step forward,” says General Manager Richard Creally. “Going fully private reflects not only our original vision, but the incredible momentum we’ve built in recent years. The strong demand from new and returning members reinforces our belief that Bearspaw offers something truly special—an exceptional golf experience in a setting that feels both elevated and welcoming.”
Rather than capping membership at a static number, Bearspaw’s new model prioritizes access to the first tee. This member-first approach ensures the experience remains exceptional for everyone, with annual reviews of course usage and attrition guiding limited openings for new members via a waitlist.
Bearspaw is also working with acclaimed Alberta golf architect Wade Horrocks to develop a Golf Course Master Plan—further elevating the experience to match the modern clubhouse that opened in 2021.
“Bearspaw’s story is one of resilience and reinvention,” says Andrew Melton, Chairman of the Board. “What began as a bold rebuild has grown into a dynamic and thriving community. This next chapter is about preserving that momentum, delivering even more for our members and fulfilling our commitment.”
While this shift signals a new level of exclusivity, Bearspaw remains proud of the diverse, community-driven energy it has fostered—including strong youth participation and a welcoming environment for families.
