As Stampede season kicks off in Calgary, Shawn Freeman, President of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization in the city, is using the occasion to spotlight his long-standing support of the Trellis Society—formerly known as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary.
Freeman, a local tech entrepreneur, credits the organization with helping shape his early life. Raised in a lower-income household in Calgary, he attended one of the local clubs as a youth. The experience kept him grounded and gave him a safe, supportive space during difficult times. Now, with over 15 years of entrepreneurial success behind him, Freeman is committed to giving back.
During the pandemic, Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary merged with Aspen Family Services to become the Trellis Society. The organization continues its proactive mission to support vulnerable youth and families, focusing on preventing problems before they arise. Freeman says this preventative approach strongly resonates with him and has kept him deeply connected as a donor and advocate.
One major initiative Freeman leads is the Ace High Stampede Kickoff, an annual fundraising event benefiting Trellis. Hosted at the Deane House in Inglewood, the event draws hundreds of attendees each year. In 2024, it raised over $100,000 in just one day. With this year’s event taking place July 4, Freeman expects another impactful outcome.
He believes Calgary’s strong culture of generosity plays a vital role in the city’s success. For Freeman, giving back isn’t just charity—it’s a key to personal and professional growth. He encourages other business leaders to engage with their communities, noting that the more he gives, the more success tends to follow.
As challenges facing today’s youth become increasingly complex, Freeman continues to champion early intervention and holistic support through Trellis.
