New research from Royal LePage highlights how rising housing costs are reshaping major life milestones for young Canadians. In an interview with Canada’s Entrepreneur, Anne-Elise Cugliari Allegritti, Vice President of Research and Communications at Royal LePage, explained that many engaged couples are prioritizing homeownership over traditional wedding spending.
According to Allegritti, the survey found that a majority of Canadians planning to marry would consider asking for financial contributions toward a home down payment instead of conventional wedding gifts. Many respondents also said they would reduce wedding expenses in order to save for a future home purchase.
She noted that affordability challenges continue to impact buyers, especially in major markets such as Toronto and Vancouver. While housing affordability has improved slightly in some segments, younger Canadians are entering the market later and searching for homes that offer more long-term flexibility for families and remote work.
Allegritti added that homeownership remains a major financial goal for Canadians despite changing lifestyles and growing rental demand. She said many younger buyers still view real estate as a key path to long-term financial stability and wealth building.
